This is the second volume of the International Bibliography of Jewish Affairs, the first having covered the years 1966-67. The ten years that elapsed between the two volumes have seen momentous events and new trends affecting Jews and Israel, both internally and externally: the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War; the Entebbe rescue operation! the politization of international organisations by the introduction of the 'Zionism equals Racism' resolution at the United Nations; the 1977 election in Israel and its consequences; the American Bicentennial and the Presidential elections; the Helsinki Conference on European Security and Cooperation which i.a. examined and placed on the international agenda the condition of Soviet Jewry; ethnic identification, particularly in the U.S.A., which led to a sharpened awareness of discrimination and prejudice against minority groups and resulted in the appearance of 'reverse discrimination'. All these and many more phenomena are mirrored in the books and articles listed.
The principles in the selection of the books and articles listed are the same as in the 1966-67 volume;
- (a) Only works published outside Israel are considered.
- (b] Both Jewish and non-Jawish authors are included.
- (c) Fiction, drama and poetry were excluded, with some exceptions of historical novels or plays chiefly relating to the Holocaust.
- (d) Also excluded were works of purely religious or theological nature (Wissenschaft des Judentums)
It is not claimed that the selection represents the whole literature on the subjects covered. The intention was to present in one volume the most important sources that may be of help to the researcher. Annotations only indicate contents and are not evaluations. Where the title clearly indicates the subject no further annotation is given. Since the Bibliography is primarily prepared for the English reader, foreign titles are translated.
Ths Bibliography is arranged according to subjects and within each section in the alphabetical order of authors. Transliterations of Hebrew, Yiddish, Arabic, Greek and Russian titles are according to international usage. For technical reasons diacritical signs are omitted. Editions of the same book in different countries are listed. Indexes of names and subjects serve also as cross-references. An index of journals in which listed articles have appeared is at the end of the volume.
Material has been compiled from primary and secondary sources perused at the Institute of Jewish Affairs and the compiler wishes to express her grateful thanks to Dr. S, J. Roth, Director, and her colleagues at the IJA for all the help and advice she received from them.
Last, but not least, thanks are due to Mrs. Patricia Shevah, Assistant Librarian, who helped with the checking of the entries and also prepared the indexes together with Mrs. Lena Stanley-Clamp, as well as to Miss Sharon Campbell who patiently and carefully typed the draft entries.
