The Purchase of Paradise: Gift Giving and the Aristocracy, 1307–1485 (Routledge Library Editions: The Medieval World): summary, description and annotation

If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Originally published in 1972, The Purchase of Paradise is an account of medieval philanthropy and looks at the late medieval aristocracy as a social, rather than political group. The book analyses their voluntary behaviour, their gift giving and the Church, and addresses the nature of charity in the Middle Ages, providing an insight into the noble families of the time. The book depicts charitable practices within the family, such as the buying of prayers for relatives, and the family traditions of support for favoured houses lasting through several generations. The book shows that the family was the most operative unit for most forms of benefaction and ecclesiastical contact, and that the hard necessities of baronial politics were often ignored when men turned their thoughts to philanthropy and prayers for their immortal souls. The book will of value to historians and sociologists alike, as well as those working in the field of anthropology.

This work is an introduction to one aspect of the social history of the English nobility in the later middle ages. I have chosen to examine some of the forms of gift giving between the aristocracy and the church in order to see what an analysis of one particular form of social action can tell us about the givers and the recipients. Gift giving has been chosen because, as a form of semi-voluntary activity, it gets us well away from the oft-covered grounds of baronial politics and economics. It also forces us to work with such concepts as the family and regional favouritism, and thus to re-examine their definition and their validity. I believe that only functional or behavioural studies such as this, rather than abstract definitions, can show us more exactly the framework of the ideas and institutions in which men and women worked in the middle ages. I also believe that, in a field of historical inquiry for which data is hardly abundant, group studies such as this, using simple statistics, offer a variety of insights not available in other ways. Historians who begin their books by announcing that a pioneer work is to follow have always puzzled me. I am content to say that since no one else has chosen to do a study like the one that follows, I have had the pleasure of working at it at various times for the past five years.
I owe many debts for this work, though both in conception and in execution I take full responsibility. The Social Science Research Council was generous enough to support me during a leave of absence from my teaching studies. The Research Foundation of the State University of New York and the American Philosophical Association also gave me tangible support, and the Institute of Historical Research was a generous host, not for the first or last time. Professor Lucy Mair, E. M. Carus-Wilson, F. R. H. DuBoulay, Sylvia Thrupp, and James L. Cate all provided encouragement and support. Professor Herbert S. Klein was a kind and helpful critic. My wife has tried, for several years, to teach me what an historical table is supposed to convey to the reader. I hope her efforts show to some avail: if they do not, I am the opaque window and must take the blame accordingly.
