This volume is the outgrowth of a suggestion from Robert Payton. It was planned while I was a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. The assistance and the unsurpassable atmosphere for research that the Center provided, and discussions with other Fellows there, greatly aided the initial stages of the project.
I drew on many people for advice about contributors: Martha Howell, Judith Walkowitz, Daniel Rubinfeld, Sidney Mintz, William Werpehowski, John Saillant, Jeffrey Stout, Marcello Suarez-Orozco, and Alfred Moss. Without their expertise I would not have known who were the best people to bring together from so many different fields. I am most grateful to them.
Robert Payton's initial interest in the project and his guidance along the way have been indispensable. Dwight Burlingame provided much-needed assistance at crucial moments. David Kaufman was quietly expert in arranging the conference at which all the contributors met to discuss the papers before submitting final versions. My thanks go to them for their continuous support. Judy Kopec graciously and skillfully helped out at the last minute. I am particularly indebted to Natalie Brender for her knowledgeable and thoughtful hard work in preparing the manuscript for publication. My deepest thanks are due, of course, to the contributors, for agreeing to write, confer, and rewrite, and so to make the book possible.
