Accommodations present themselves under various, sometimes confusing, names in Peru: hospadajes, hostales, and hotels. Only the full service establishments can legitimately call themselves hotel. A hotel will usually aspire to resemble an American-style hotel; expect a restaurant, elevators, hot water from a central heating tank. Beds are usually good quality. Some of the budget hospedajes and hostales are in the most interesting buildings and locations. Converted colonial mansions and even structures that were once original Inca hostelries and houses serve as excellent spaces for guest accommodations. In smaller, less popular towns, you can find a clean, comfortable room in a convenient location for as little as $10 per night. There are backpackers hostels throughout Peru. Near the hot springs in Aguas Calientes is one of them, with 24-hour hot showers. There is a television lounge, a communal kitchen, barbecue area, laundry service, bar, games room, free internet terminal and WiFi connection. A breakfast is included in the price. Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a five-minute walk from Aguas Calientes on 12 acres of cloud forest on the banks of the Rio Vilcanota. The gardens are planted with hundreds of species of orchids, palm trees, ferns, and other exotic native plants. There are 85 rooms, all with views of the gardens and river. It is built in Spanish colonial style with one and two story bungalows and casitas, some with their own fireplaces, Jacuzzis, private gardens and pools. It is arranged to resemble an Andean cloud forest village. Rooms and suites have private bathrooms and telephones, WiFi, and television. There is a restaurant, caf, bar, chapel, spring water fed swimming pool, gift shop, fireplace lounge, illuminated gardens. The hotel also runs a tour company and an ecological reserve. These are just two of the hundreds of places to stay described here in detail, from luxury palace accommodations to campsites. And then there are the restaurants. Cuscos hottest Mediterranean restaurant serves Italian and Spanish favorites. There is a Tapas menu as well as full meals. It is in a colonial building behind Plaza de Armas. There is a Tuscan feel to the place and a display of their wine selections and an in-house bakery that provides good olfactory and visual stimulation. And for nightlife, here are a few of the hundreds of places you may want to consider: Paddy Flahertys in Cusco is an Irish pub near the Cathedral on the plaza. Sports events are on the TVs and Irish beer, Irish whisky, and Irish coffee are available, along with pub food. There are nightly happy hours for drink deals. Paddys boasts that it is the highest-elevation Irish pub in the world. The Cross Keys Pub is Cuscos only British pub. It is owned by the British Consul to Cusco. There are dart boards, satellite televisions with British programming, WiFi, smoke-free (except the balcony), imported British beer and other imports, Chilean wine, cocktails, pub grub, and a cozy fireplace. And then there is the nightlife. Ukukus is one of Cuscos most popular dance clubs for travelers and locals. Live music, usually rock, reggae and salsa begin every night at 11. They also have DJ music between live bands to keep the dance floor hopping. Ukukus shows movies on the big screen in the afternoons. Another one is Kamikaze, a disco dance bar that attracts locals and tourists with a blend of DJ music including Latin and salsa, reggae, rock and disco. There is also live music every night. These are just a few samples. All of the best restaurants, hotels and places to party are described in detail here.

THE HEART OF PERU & ITS HISTORY
INTRODUCTION
Cusco, Machu Picchu & the Sacred Valley

For most visitors Peru s main attractions are Machu Picchu , the Sacred Valley ( Valle Sagrado de los Incas) , and Cusco . Machu Picchu is the most popular tourist destination in all of South America . Visitors come to witness the archeological record at Machu Picchu , at the fortress of Ollantaytambo, in the Incan metropolis of Cusco , and at hundreds of other sites.

The image of Machu Picchu is inseparable from the name Peru . Most visitors carry this icon in their imaginations, and arrive to compare and confront the reality. It is an anticipation that never disappoints.

Machu Picchu seemingly materialized from thin air in 1911 when Hiram Bingham discovered it hidden under densely overgrown jungle, abandoned and forgotten by its citizens. It is a tale of the adventure of exploration and discovery. The citys mystique is tied to the sudden conquest of the vast Inca Empire by the invading Spanish Conquistadors.

Today Machu Picchu s history is being re-interpreted, and visitors can witness the past coming to light. Researchers including archeologists, anthropologists, historians, architects, and environmentalists are marveling at the citys perfect integration of architecture with geography.

Machu Picchu is now even more compelling with its status as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, an honor conferred on the site in 2006.

The dramatic terrain and lush vegetation of the Sacred Valley is another attraction for the intrepid traveler, offering outdoor thrills and adventures. Hiking the Inca Trail into Machu Picchu is a most authentic way to arrive, and to explore the exotic landscape. Its an experience that many hikers dream of checking off from their bucket list.

The towering Andes Mountains have an appeal beyond the archeological sites and ancient civilizations. The jungles, cloud forests and alpine ecologies attract adrenaline addicts looking for mountaineering experiences, white water rafting and kayaking thrills, and jungle tours.

A tour through Cusco and the Sacred Valley is also a journey through a range of climates. At the heights along the plateau in Cusco it is a chilly, arid alpine desert. Travelling down from the Andes , and descending the Sacred Valley , is a trip into a moist tropical cloud forest.

Most journeys into the Sacred Valley begin in Cusco . The Inca Empire grew to fullness once the capital was established at Cusco , and the city remains the most visual record of the empires downfall. The Conquistadors stripped the Inca palaces and temples of gold and then set to work eradicating the culture, demolishing the monumental buildings. This proved too big of a job even for these determined conquerors. Incan stone masonry defeated the invaders efforts, and the foundations of the major monumental buildings of Cusco were left standing to serve as the foundations of the new Spanish structures: the cathedral, the church, governors palace are all built on top of Inca stonework.

Peru has many other attractions: Lima s urban charms, the great beaches, the Amazon jungle, etc, but Machu Picchu , the Scared Valley and Cusco outshine them all.

THE TOP TEN INCA SITES

1. Machu Picchu is one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. Built on top of a mountain, its location and design are the peak of Inca urban perfection; a perfect mingling of architecture into its surrounding landscape.

The fortress at Ollantaytambo, the Royal House of the Sun, is a big tourist draw, but never as crowded as Machu Picchu.

2. Ollantaytambo Fortress Complex rises on a hillside overlooking the town. Massive rocks terrace to the peak. It includes temples and guard posts. It is almost as spectacular a construction as Machu Picchu.
3. Ollantaytambo, Old Town, is the best preserved continuously occupied Inca town. It is among the earliest of the Inca planned cities. The homes, streets and buildings have not been significantly altered. Walking among these stone alleys with their ancient waterworks is like a trip through time.
4. Moray The terraced pits of Moray look like a giant amphitheatre but it was an agricultural research and production facility for the Incas, where various strains of plants were developed. It is an ancient agricultural laboratory and seed factory for the Empire.
5. Salinas is a vast network of interconnected terraces spanning down a hilltop. This is a salt mine where the natural deposits are refined by solar evaporation. The mines still provide a livelihood for the same local families who have worked these deposits for centuries.
6. Qanchisracay the fortress complex sits 2 miles high above over the town of Pisac . It has been cut out of the solid bedrock of the mountain. Above it the Temple of the Sun seems to connect to the sky.

7. Inca Terraces of the Sacred Valley were the basis of an agricultural system called Andenerias. They are an agriculture and engineering marvel as well as pleasing to behold. The terraces are found throughout the valley, and are still in use today. Some of the best examples are seen above Pisac and Ollantaytambo.
8. Koricanchu is the Temple of the Sun in central Cusco . Though it was overbuilt by Colonial buildings the huge trapezoid shaped Inca stones that define its foundations are spectacular.

9. Sacsayhuaman, the fortress that guards the city of Cusco sits on a hilltop overlooking the valley. The giant stone blocks are classic examples of Inca building. The scale of construction is awe inspiring.
10. Tambomachay, the Inca Aqueducts are outside of Cusco. Ritual royal showers were conducted here, and a purification ceremony is still performed each August. Tambomachay is a stunning example of sophisticated Inca water works, fully functional to this day.
