Introduction
Rarely do we see people who appreciate thebeauty of simplicity. A minimalist lifestyle helps us understandthe importance of coming loose from living a life being dependenton materials that we have attached ourselves into, from ourmindless consumption of items that we think we need and eventuallybeing surrounded by cluttered environment because of our nonstoppurchasing that gives us pleasure.
The choices we make and the kind of life welive simply reflect from the things we stack in our homes. Thosepeople who choose to live in small houses have good stories totell. They are the types of people who do not really spend much oftheir time being at home. These settlers travel more than theyusually do, they also tend to be more quirky because they go beyondthe usual ideas to provide the needed home furniture and at thesame time find creative ideas to make these things fit in such asmall space provided and lastly, these individuals know how tovalue their items more than other people would usually do sincethey do not spend much of their time and efforts going after thenext new thing but instead maximize and give their possessionsextra care.
However, in our situation today, everybodywants everything. Majority of us live with mindsets that we need tohave the latest inventions of everything. Why do you think we keepon upgrading our technologies, change from one fashion trend toanother and inventing more efficient ways to get things done.Unfortunately, we are even unaware that it has come to a point ofaffecting our way of living. It seems that wherever we go we seethese influences trying to take control of our choices. Forinstance, the media has doubled their efforts in making peoplevulnerable and getting gullible minds nailed to products andservices they offer. Big companies are also sprouting here andthere, making us feel that we have to be more competent. These alsoinclude family members and friends pressuring and expecting us tobe someone whom we are not thus, making us feel that we also needto have next big thing in order to satisfy the demands of society.Eventually, this kind of behavior subtly brings us to living anextravagant life and forgetting what really matters most as of themoment.
Our lifestyle has obviously been influencedby what society brings us which, in fact, should be done the otherway around. By this, we mean to say that we should be control ofour own choices. Some of us tend to behave in such a way to beaccepted by others or to just get away with the pressure of howother people will think about us. We no longer live by what wetruly want but by what others want. We may be unconscious aboutthis and even deny it most of the time but this is truly a sadthing about us humans.
We live in a world that constantly changes.Thats for sure. For that reason, we tend to put out so much moneyjust to be in the same current of what society brings to us. Wefind pleasure in shopping for new clothes so that we may join thenew trend, we update our gadgets with the latest features for thesake of giving us a more efficient day and we even spend on newlyinvented things just because it is on sale and it will give uspeace of mind thinking that we will eventually find use for it inthe future. We keep on spending and spending on things that weactually even have already and it just starts to pile up dustaround the corners of our houses. We just have two television sets,a computer for each family member, tons and tons of outdatedmagazines, old clothes that no longer fit anymore and those boxesof junk that you said you will get back too soon. Have you evenever asked yourselves why we spend so much on material things tomake us happy when there are so much other things that we canactually invest on what will last long as memories?
At the end of the day, we will never findcomplete satisfaction from these material things we continuouslyspend our money on. Start getting rid of those useless items thatyou have been ignoring for over a year. Perhaps, it would be muchbetter if you give it to someone who would find more use for it.Not only did you bring change to your own life but you have alsobrightened up someones day. It will be hard when you finally findyourself at that moment of holding a trash bag on one hand and apriced possession on the other, but always keep in mind thatfinally letting go of the things that no longer bring meaning toyour life will also be a big step to a better life.
These material things present inside yourhome will only bring temporary happiness to your life. Instead, start investing on something that will be worth remembering perhaps get on with your bucket list. The world is already bigenough to be your home.
Chapter1: Being Satisfied Living with Less
Studies have shown that materialistic peoplehave higher tendencies of being unsatisfied with life and beingdepressed. These individuals allow these possessions to define whothey are and they think it is difficult living another day withoutthese things. For instance, we see a lot of people with handsfilled with so many gadgets at the same time. We think we need tosurvive life by having two cellular phones, a separate iPod forleisure, tablet for other applications and another laptop for whoknows what. How about having a car for each family member; atelevision set for each room; or perhaps a huge house just for afamily of four? Try to think about all the bills you have to pay tobe able to keep these things for long. Dont you think it would bemuch better to start downsizing your life?
The first big step that will require minimalliving is having the courage to finally let go of the things thathave lost their value and at the same time, having an open mind fornew things, new ideas, and new opportunities. We will never learnto have more if we do not learn how to let go of some.
The only way to learn how to be satisfiedwith less is by appreciating what we have right in front of us. Maythese be the old couch sitting in our living room that just alittle dry cleaning to do, those old school radios that grandpa hasbeen keeping ever since which is now sitting on your kitchen table, your bouncy bed which will just need a few repairs or even yourclothes that are already out of style yet good for a few moreyears.
Definitely, it takes a lot of effort to standfirm on the set of values we want to accomplish in order to startliving a better lifestyle. But then again, all we really need is tomake sure we want the choices we make so that decisions will not beso much of a challenge to face later on.
