There is something quintessentially American about a road trip out West.

Amid long stretches of highway and wide-open country, with no evidence of civilization besides a far-off fence line, theres something about being out here that reminds us how a day works: the way the sun moves across the sky; the way your body gets tired when it takes you to the top of a mountain; the way a good burger ought to taste, first juicy bite in. Things are simpler hereand they are also beautiful beyond words.

Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier National Parks are the jewels in this humble crown. They are ineffable in their beauty and unknowable in their vastness and scale, from soaring mountainscapes and hulking grizzly bears to the tiniest wild orchid, purple against green. There is wildness here. You can feel it.

But there is civilization here as well. And culture. There are Native American reservations where you can experience the visual and auditory feast of a powwow. There are little towns that feel untouched by time. There are big towns, too, with museums and restaurants, with old theaters and new art galleries. You can be comfortable when you travel out herea big bed, a good mealbut youll find yourself humbled at being part of something much larger than any of us dare to imagine. Come out West, to these parks, to this landscape. Make your way between destinations by slowing down, by paying attention. If you honor whats here, and what came before, this place will change you.

Where to Go
Yellowstone National Park

This magnificent and dynamic place was the worlds first national park. A natural wonderland, Yellowstone offers a rare and up-close view into one of the last large intact ecosystems in the Northern Hemisphere. See abundant wildlife, including bison, elk, bears, and wolves; marvel at geothermal features like Old Faithful, or swim in them at the Boiling River; hike the peaks, Mount Washburn for starters; and stay in historic lodges like the Old Faithful Inn and the rambling Lake Yellowstone Hotel. Perimeter communities, including West Yellowstone, Gardiner, and remote Cooke City, should not be missed.

Grand Teton National Park

Grand Teton packs a punch, particularly when it comes to mountain splendor. Twelve peaks in the Teton Range soar above 12,000 feet (3,658 m). And while there are only 152 miles (245 km) of paved roads in the park, there are nearly twice as many miles of trails, and more than1,200 designated campsites, leaving hikers endless options for adventure at breathtaking spots like Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. Favorite landmarks include picturesque Jenny Lake, vast Jackson Lake, drive-to-the-summit Signal Mountain, and serene Oxbow Bend; favorite ways to enjoy the beauty of the region include hiking, biking, and rafting. Just south of the park, the gateway community of Jackson Hole offers ritzy accommodations and a thriving culinary scene.

Rocky Mountain Front

The vast plains erupt into soaring peaks along the Rocky Mountain Front. Tiny towns like Choteau and Augusta give visitors a look at tight-knit and hardy communities, along with fascinating sites like dinosaur mecca Egg Mountain and quaint old hotels. Straddling the division between mountains and plains, Great Falls boasts two of the states best museums: the C. M. Russell Museum and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center.
