I would like to dedicate this book to my mother Mary Heron. She loved hints books and I know she would have been very proud of this one. A big thank you to Joe, Karen, Arleen, Orla, Cathal and Brenda for their encouragement and support.
Efficiency means accomplishing more with less exertion and less expense.
This comprehensive collection of over one thousand valuable hints and tips has been compiled to help make day to day tasks more easily completed and with less expense. Over the years I have accumulated hundreds of household hints and tips. Many were given to me by my mother and friends, others have come from my own experience as a cook and housewife.
Natural products are used wherever appropriate and this is important in our environmentally friendly society. Many of these are in daily use in the kitchen so they are easily accessible when required.
Cooking, baking, household chores, laundry, stain removal, D.I.Y and gardening are the main subjects covered but you will find much more of interest; especially the proverbs and poems that have given me pleasure over the years.
Working on this book has been a labour of love, I have got such great enjoyment sorting and arranging the hints, tips and ideas into a practical book. I hope you find it helpful, interesting and entertaining but most of all that it is useful to you and improves the quality of your daily life.
MARY ROSE
Go little book, and wish to all,
Flowers in the garden, meat in the hall,
A bin of wine, a spice of wit,
A house with lawns enclosing it,
A living river by the door,
A nightingale in the sycamore!

DAIRY PRODUCE
If Greek yoghurt is unavailable, mix a carton of low-fat natural yoghurt and a carton of fresh cream together.
Add 1tsp (5ml) crushed instant coffee granules to cream before whipping for an excellent topping for bananas or ice cream.
Store cartons of sour and double cream upside down in the refrigerator to keep fresher for longer.
Pipe unused whisked fresh cream into rosettes on a baking tray and freeze for dessert decoration.
Freeze left over fresh cream in ice cube trays, put into a plastic bag when frozen and use in soups as required.
Increase the volume of double cream by mixing two parts double cream with one part single. Or lightly whip 1/4pt (150ml) double cream, add 2tbsp (30ml) milk or yoghurt and continue whipping until required consistency is reached.
Add one whisked egg white to a carton of double cream to make twice the quantity.
Whipped single cream is lighter if you mix in a little cold water before the last whip.
To keep fresh cream for longer, add one teaspoon of brandy to the carton.
Maximise the sherry taste in a trifle by adding most of the sherry to the cream and the remainder to the sponge.
