Chapter 1. Do-It-Yourself Home Maintenance An Overview

Do-It-Yourself or DIY has come a long way since its earliest recorded use in 6 BC, which took place in a temple-like Greek structure in southern Italy recently discovered by Italian archeologists. There, the local people are believed to have mingled with Greeks who settled along the southern coast. The archaeologists discovered various parts of the building inscribed with coded symbols showing how mass-produced components should be slotted together.

That only served as a foretaste of more involved DIY processes. It opened up the gates to people being able to make their own personal products.

The earliest use of the term do-it-yourself in relation to consumers doing home improvement and maintenance activities was observed in 1912. However, it was in the 1950s that a growing number of people took to home improvement, small craft and simple construction projects as a hobby and cost-saving activity.

DIY has proven to be an effective cost-saving measure for American households. Aside from the money saved, it is also a time saver since you dont have to wait for a specialist to fix something in the house. Furthermore, it has a therapeutic effect on people who enjoy doing their own repairs because the feeling of fulfillment adds to their wellbeing.

DIY can take many forms: furniture cleaning, stain removal, odor control and pest control. Imagine how much you can save by doing these things yourself and not having to call those so-called specialists.
