Energy affects all of our lives. We depend on it for transportation, industry, and to power our homes, as well as for hundreds of other uses you might never consider. With so many standard and emerging alternative energy sources available, its no wonder that the average person doesnt know the fundamental methods utilized to obtain, produce, and distribute energy. This section includes background details and activities to explain energy fundamentals and help you understand them. Energy is what makes things change or move. It is found in many forms, including heat, chemical, light, electrical, and mechanical energy. Kinetic energy is the energy in moving things. Energy that can be stored for later use is called potential energy.

Gases, solids, and chemicals can all store potential energy that may be released later in a variety of ways. For instance, when certain substances, such as coal, are burned, the process releases energy in the form of heat. In a coal-fired electrical power plant, the heat that the released energy produces is used to boil water into steam, which in turn propels turbine blades to power an electrical generator. See .
