ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

An encyclopedia never has one author; it is a composite of the knowledge and experience of many, many individuals as well as companies and organizations. It also means a lot of seeking out and boiling down and reconciling of both written and oral information. This book tapped all of the above, including many of my professional cleaner colleagues, in addition to my own more than thirty-five years of professional cleaning experience. Thanks to all the contributors who teamed up on this, the big cleaning book of all time, dedicated to making the world a cleaner place.

AUTHORS NOTE

As I was attempting to solve a serious stain problem on a national broadcast, an expert carpet cleaner in the Chicago area called in with a classic comment. In stain removal, there are no heroes. No one could have said it better, and the same is true of cleaning instructions. We all want a complete and easy answer to the problem at hand. But as we approach the twenty-first century there are at least 10,000 different types of objects and surfaces in the average home, including designs and materials that no one knows how to clean. The directions in this book are ones I and hundreds of other experts use as our general guide to alienating dirt from that particular article. But we run into some stumpers and you will too, even following the directions in this book perfectly. The age of something, the length of time the stain or soil has been on or in it, what you or someone else has done previously in an attempt to clean it, and what else has happened to it sinceall conspire to foil even the most professional approach. Some stains and soils are permanent, and theres nothing you or anyone can do about it. In the following pages Ive done my best to guide you in the right direction. But there are so many variables and unknowns over which I have no control that I cant be held responsible for any damage which may result from any particular application of the procedures outlined in these pages. So be content with the 98 percent of your efforts that work and count it experience when the occasional something doesnt come clean easily or at all.

INTRODUCTION

One time-management expert says we spend four years of our life cleaning; others claim we spend as much as a decade at the process of purifying our homes, ourselves, and our surroundings. I cant tell you which is right, but I do know that even one year is too much. How will we ever get to the things we really care about in life with one hand on the garbage can and the other in the toilet?

My whole mission for more than thirty-five years now has been to reduce, if not eliminate, cleaning and make what cleaning is necessary fun, fast, and easy. Ive written a dozen books on the subject to date, and Im told theyve cut millions of hours of housework out of the world, kept countless marriages together, and saved thousands of tons of raw material (in household furnishings that dont have to be replaced before their time). One thing Ive discovered in the process is that not only do we not have days or hours to clean anymoremaybe only minuteswe also have a lot more kinds of things to clean. And even if Mother knew how to clean all of them, she probably didnt have time to teach us. So we need something to tell us how to do it and what to use, or just to reassure us that we in our own infinite wisdom are doing it the fastest and best possible way. In other words, a complete A to Z cleaning reference book, based not on old wives tales or clever hints and tips but on the techniques and tools of the professionals. Who better to do it than the Worlds No. 1 Cleaning Expert? The book you hold in your hands is a catalog of cures for over 500 different items. I hope you find it not only useful but enjoyable.

Why Clean?

You can sum it all up under five big strong Ss: Sanitation Safety. Scenery and Serenity and Savings.

Sanitation

Staying alive and healthy is one very good reason to clean. Germs (bacteria, fungus, viruses, etc.) and bugs thrive in unclean conditions. And dust can cause breathing problems for those of us with asthma or allergies. Cleaning beats aspirin in fighting the common cold and all kinds of debilitating and dangerous diseases. And itll do more to discourage unwanted little intruders than the best mousetrap or roach killer. We spend a lot of money on perfumes and deodorizers to get rid of unpleasant household odors, but cleaning doesnt allow them to existit eliminates the bacteria and molds that create them.

Safety

Keeping things neat and orderly around your home and workplacein other words, keeping it cleanwill do more to prevent accidents and injuries than any other single thing. Many auto accidents also are caused by stuff hanging all over the car, rolling around on the floor, or from dirty windows that interfere with vision. Dirt and clutter kills literally. (And if your home is clean and inviting, youll spend more time there where its safer!)

Scenery and Serenity

Well do anything (legal or not), spend any amount of time or money to make ourselves feel good. And what ultimately makes you feel better than cleanclean sheets, a clean shirt, sparkling windows, a newly vacuumed rug or freshly waxed floor? Keeping clean not only keeps you in a position to function well physically, it keeps you mentally and emotionally healthy too. Keeping the home, yourself, and the world clean generates peace in all three places. (Believe it, cleaning cuts family fights!) Dirt and disarray rob you of space, freedom, health, respect, position, and production. Sloppy surroundings carry over into your thoughts and emotions and affect the way you feel, love and perform at work and at home.
