CHAPTER 1
THE WONDERS OF BAKING SODA
Although commercially offered as a compliment to making cakes, this magical substance has found its way into other areas of delight within the home.
This may have something to do with the chemical composition of sodium bicarbonate (another term for baking soda). This natural substance has the capacity to equalize pH levels of substances with which it is mixed. In simpler words, its a perfect balance between acidic and alkaline, which makes it perfect for most cleaning purposes.
On top of being cheap, baking soda isnt toxic at all which makes it an ideal kitchen partner and cleaning back-up. There is a multitude of applications for baking soda beyond the realm of baking.
Sink Declogger
Mix a cup of baking soda with an equal amount of vinegar in one cup. Before pouring this mixture into a clogged drain, pour some hot water first to help melt down the clog. The baking soda mixture will soften whatever it is thats clogging the drain.
Comb Buddy
When combs and brushes have been used for a long time, theres going to be a build-up of dirt and oils that is going to damage the hair the next time its used. These built-up nuances can be cleaned by dipping the comb in a bowl full of warm water and two tablespoons of baking soda. Simply leave the combs in the mixture for about fifteen minutes then leave to dry.
Baby Friendly
Since baking soda neutralizes acidity levels in substances, it can be mixed with certain laundry detergents when washing baby clothes. When washing, toss in half a cup of baking soda along with the detergent to come up with fresh and toxic-free clothing suitable for babies.
Silver Polish
Antique utensils and cutlery will regain their shine through a baking soda rub. Mix two parts of baking soda with one part water. This will create a paste that can be applied to tarnished areas and reveal the former luster of silverware. The pH balancing capabilities of baking soda will prevent further rusting and protect the pieces from additional dirt. After rubbing the mixture unto the utensils, wash off and then dry.
Dishwasher Cleaner
After being used so many times, the interior of a dishwasher is prone to acquiring the smells of various food items. To deodorize the dishwasher, throw in some baking soda into the cycle.
Another way to do this is to place a small bowl filled with water and two tablespoons of baking soda into the empty dishwasher and run the wash cycle. The neutrality of the baking soda will even out both the acidic food smells and the alkaline scents that have stuck to the corners of the dishwasher.
Oven Cleaner
To make the scrubbing easier, sprinkle baking soda all over the bottom portion of the oven. Once every inch of the bottom has been covered in a light film of baking soda, spray a fine mist of water on the surface to help moisten the mixture. Leave the soggy baking soda in the oven overnight to absorb all the stains and the smells. The powder will scrub off easily in the morning.
Interestingly, this hack can also be used with microwave ovens. Instead of sprinkling the sodium bicarbonate over the inner surfaces of the microwave oven, leave a bowl containing a mixture of water and baking soda in the oven and leave for a night. The smells should disappear in the morning.
Grease Remover
Grease are tough stains that can ruin almost any carpet. Throw some baking soda unto the stained area and leave for about ten minutes. Scrub the area with a wet brush after.
Vomit Menace
Depending on the content of the vomit, more baking soda is needed to help lift such messes from the carpet. Cover the stained area with a generous helping of sodium bicarbonate and leave overnight. The baking soda will solidify the chunkier parts of the vomit and turn the mess into an easy-to-vacuum mess in the morning.
