CHAPTER 1
THE REAL ISSUES BEHIND HOME CLUTTER
No matter how many episodes of Hoarders you have seen, you still should not consider yourself a bad person if your home is filled with clutter. Clutter can accumulate in many ways: through laziness, neglect, a busy schedule that does not allow for regular cleaning, not enough space for the people living in the home, any number of reasons.
Yet, one truth that comes through on Hoarders and should give you pause is this: mental illness is usually behind every person that has so much stuff that they cannot move in their own home.
We trust that your home is not that bad at this point. If it is, you will need professional help in several areas, including the psychological realm. Nevertheless, even if you do not qualify as having a mental illness, there can be several psychological factors involved in your home clutter, which shouldnt surprise you or discourage you.
Here are a couple of issues behind home clutter, one or more of which might be true of you:
Your homes interior reached a point where you could no longer keep up with the clutter and you waved the figurative white flag. No one has gotten hurt since you surrendered; no bills have been unpaid, so you have simply accepted defeat in regards to your clutter. You will need to have a steely resolve to be able to apply the advice given in this e-book. You will have to take a deep breath and say to the world that you are not going to give up. Rather, you are going to do battle with your clutter and win, one small step at a time.
You have clutter because you have been trying to keep up with the Joneses in your life. You joke about being a shopaholic, but the deeper issue is far more serious. Many people who have too much stuff also live beyond their means. You might be deep in debt and knee-deep in junk because you have believed (wrongly) that the person with the most stuff wins in life. Its true that making a good income can lead to a higher quality of life, but it is also true that material things have never made anyone deeply happy. You might need to swear off materialism as your guiding philosophy of life before you can de-clutter your home. Until you stop bringing more stuff into your limited amount of space, you will have a very difficult time winning the battle against clutter.
You want to win the fight against a house stocked in junk, but others in your household are not on board. We can find ourselves in many different living situationsthe traditional family with a spouse and children, having one or more roommates, having a family added to other relatives in the house, etc. You will probably be unable to win the war on clutter alone. You are going to need to engage your housemates in the fight as well. Perhaps you have led a simple lifestyle to this point, but are overwhelmed by the additional stuff that your housemates bring into your living quarters. This can be the reason why you have excessive clutter as well.
You have an irrational fear that you will need something that you are tempted to discard. This is a very common mind-set and does not indicate extreme psychological imbalance. At the same time, it needs to be recognized as an unwise attitude. A variation of this perspective can be found in the people who buy back-up goods in case the tool or fan or other appliance fails to continue to work or gets lost. If you have adopted this practice, you get points for preparation but a zero for realism and organization, two areas that you seek to be strong in if you are reading this e-book.
Finally, another hang-up that small-time hoarders have is hanging on to any item that has sentimental value. If this condition is probed deeply, it will reveal a person that has an unhealthy attachment to the past. By discarding some of these items, you might find that you are able to release the past in a healthy manner and focus on the present and future. This, of course, does not mean that you cant keep many sentimental items aroundphotos, baby clothes, etc.but it does mean that you need to restrict their number and package and store them neatly. Just having an impromptu museum in your life is not a healthy outlook.
Again, it is a waste of mental energy to feel guilty about having too many things and becoming increasingly buried under a mound of material possessions. Your mental energy is better spent making a plan to de-clutter your home.
This e-book will not take the time to put you on a guilt trip. Rather, it will seek to give you concrete steps that you can take to de-clutter your home, including many that involve the mind-set that you need to have.
In addition, this e-book will instruct you on how to keep your home de-cluttered, which can be quite a challenge after an initial victory of cleaning and discarding. The contents will also advise you about mistakes to avoid as you de-clutter, along with some final words of wisdom to help you on the journey.
We start with positive motivation to help you get off your backside and into the game. Lets take a look at the many great reasons why you should embark on de-cluttering your home.
CHAPTER 2
THE BENEFITS OF DE-CLUTTERING
YOUR HOME
You probably dont even need to read this e-book to figure out some of the benefits of de-cluttering your home. A few of those benefits are probably right under your nose, where you thought you put the remote control but cant find it because there is too much junk laying around.
Dont worry if you cant find that remoteyou are far from alone. In a 2008 survey, 2/3 of those surveyed said that their homes were somewhat disorganized and 70% said that better organization would improve their lives specifically by helping them to save up to one hour a day in searching for items.

You can find items more easily
