Acknowledgments

Wow! Who ever thought that I would be writing a book? For anyone reading this who isnt surprised, Thank You!because you are one of the people who helped me on my path of career and life.

I didnt know any lawyers growing up, and I considered law school because (1) what else do you do with a degree in international relations? And (2) I graduated in the middle of a recession.

I found that I love the law. My parents wisely told me when I went to college (and had just gotten my first less-than-inspiring grade in an advanced math class I felt compelled to take) that its OK to enjoy your classes, and that you can choose to do things because you love them, not just because they are challenging. When I took my first tax law class, I was fascinated by the tax code. Here are all these rules about how the government tries to enforce policy and mold society by the way it interacts with your money, and here are all these exceptions (again coming from behavior we as a nation want to encourage or discourage). So, I followed my parents excellent advice and created a career helping people use the tax code and the law to their advantage, and here we are. See mom, I do listen to you! Thank you for all the hugs, encouragement, listening, and because I am your mom advice throughout the years.

This book would not exist without my lead editor, Jeff Olson, who sent me an e-mail one day asking Have you ever considered writing a book? and the whole team at Apress Publishing. Thank you, Jeff, not only for giving me this opportunity, but also for all the cheerleading, prodding, patience, guidance, kudos, and suggestions. If you like the book, let Jeff knowI think I have some other ones in me! If Jeff is the big-picture guy, then Rita Fernando, as the coordinating editor, is the get it done gal. I had no idea what goes into publishing a book, and truth be told I still dont know all the details, because Rita has elegantly orchestrated all the moving pieces to produce this wonderful work that would not exist without her efforts, for which I am eternally grateful. I also need to acknowledge and thank my copy editor, Tiffany Taylor, whose talent at finding just the right word or turn of phrase polished my thoughts to a gleaming shine.

Hank Fein is my mentor and one of the finest attorneys I know. The best way for me to thank him for all the knowledge and opportunities he has shared with me throughout the years is to hope that he finds some of his thought process being shared with the world through this book.
