In many ways, the world has changed dramatically since The China Study was released in 2005. Ten years ago, most doctors thought the idea that diet might solve serious health problems was fantasy. Now I hear of more and more doctors actually recommending a plant-based diet to their patients! Ten years ago, plant-based eating was considered the province of the radical fringe and was viewed as dangerous and unhealthy. Now mainstream New York Times food critic Mark Bittman has released a book entitled VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health... for Good, which quickly became a best-seller.

And former President of the United States Bill Clinton announced that his plant-based diet (inspired, in part, by The China Study) has allowed him to overcome heart disease! James Cameron, producer of Titanic and Avatar and record holder of going to the greatest depth in the ocean, said that he and his family made a change almost overnight after viewing the film Forks Over Knives and reading The China Study. So, too, did many world-class athletes, like golfer Gary Player, footballer Tony Gonzalez, champion Ultimate Fighter James Wilks, and world record holder strongman Patrik Baboumian. My coauthor, Dr. Tom Campbell, and I have sold well over one million copies of The China Study, and were proud of the role we have played in this transformation. Our work, and that of writers and researchers such as Dr. John McDougall, Dr.

Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Pamela Popper, and others, have made major contributions in shifting public opinion in this direction. But were just at the beginning.

Americas health is still failing miserably. We spend far more, per capita, on health care than any other society in the world, and yet two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and the epidemics of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer continue unabated. Our elected officials spend their time fighting bitterly over alternative health care proposalsnone of which address the fundamental problems that could lead to less demand for health care services. The solution is quite simple, though. A good diet is the most powerful weapon we have in the fight for real health. As we said in The China Study, the solution comes down to three things: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

In over five decades of biomedical research, my research group and I have learned, in so many ways, that a whole food, plant-based diet promotes optimal health and the prevention and even reversal in many cases of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and brain disorders. Ive received overwhelming feedback from people who have seen incredible health results after transitioning to a whole food, plant-based diet. But Im still often asked about some of the more practical, everyday aspects of adopting and living this lifestyle. Perhaps the most common question is simply, What do I eat? My daughter, Dr. LeAnne Campbell, released a compilation of some of our familys favorite recipes in her best-seller,
