TRAVEL RESOURCES WEBSITES: http://www.japan-guide.com
This is my favorite Japan travel site for planning, especially from a logistical standpoint! It has a lot of great information about destinations with details about rates, routes and train fares. The site is regularly updated with information and dates for specific seasons and festivals, including cherry blossom season and fall color tracking. There's even information alerting visitors when a given area will be undergoing maintenance or new construction. http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng
This is the official site of the Japan National Tourism Organization.

This comprehensive site is a great resource for information on whatever might interest you in and about Japan. The site sometimes features promotions and contests as well. http://www.hyperdia.com
Hyperdia's site shows the routes and the timetables of the railway and aviation of Japan. I highly recommend using this site to check out the timetables for Shinkansen in advance of your trip, especially if you are using a Japan Rail pass. Hotels.com
I find it easy to book and search for hotels on this site. Also, you can get a free night for every 10 nights you book with them! Tripadvisor.com
This is a great place to do some more in-depth research on hotels and restaurants before you book.

They post tons of reviews. Kayak.com
This site lets you compare the prices offered by different online travel sites, so it's a good way to shop using a single search. The site also has a page (Click MORE on the main menu) for more general information, so you can compare airline baggage costs and get a sense of flight costs your area to other parts of the country/world.

HANDY JAPAN APPS For Getting Around: trains.jp
This is a lifesaver for riding trains in the Tokyo area. Just type in your origin and destination stations, then you get a choice of routes, with ride duration, fares, and transfers easily outlinedall in English. Hyperdia
This site and app includes Shinkansen and train routes all over Japan.

The app has a 30-day free trial, after which you can buy a subscription. Handy if you are doing more countrywide travel. Google Maps
Map apps are great, and a phone with GPS is indispensible especially in Japan, where directions can be very confusing. For speaking the language: Kotaba
A basic Japanese language study app, helpful for beginners. Human Japanese
This is a popular, friendly app for learning the written and spoken language. Learn Japanese
If you're traveling with an iPhone, the Learn Japanese app (this series is available for other languages as well) is great for finding the phrases you need and learning how to say them.

There's even an option for hearing the phrase spoken slowly, to make them easier to repeat.

SOME OTHER RECOMMENDED DESTINATIONS This book focuses on destinations in Japan that I've traveled to personally, so it is by no means a complete guide. Every time I return I go somewhere new! Here are a few of the places I visited after the art for this book was completed. Hiroshima
Rebuilt after the aftermath of World War II, this city has monuments, museums and parks dedicated to the pursuit of peace. If you have a JR Pass, you can use it on the Maple Loop tour bus. Handy! Miyajima
Home of the iconic red torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine that stands up out of the water at high tide, Miyajima is a must-see, and it is an easy day trip from Hiroshima.

Miyajima also has deer (similar to Nara, but visitors are forbidden to feed them) and Mount Misen for fans of hiking as well as gorgeous mountain views. Onomichi
Onomichi is a charming town in Hiroshima Prefecture. The main attraction is the 25-temple walk, a scenic route that goes up and down winding hills on a path connecting 25 temples. Yokohama Chinatown
Japan's largest Chinatown is bordered by ornate and lovely gates. The colorful Kanteibyo temple is a must-see and there are plenty of interesting food stands with dumplings and other delicacies! Pandas are a major theme here, so remember to pick up a cute panda souvenir.

IMPORTANT INFO IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES Police Boxes are stationed in major metropolitan areas and they can often assist with directions.

In Japanese a police box is called Koban". In emergencies, the numbers to call are 110 (police) or 119 (ambulance/fire). The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo's Telephone #* is 81-3-3224-5000. Earthquakes are a fairly common occurrence in Japan. Typically they are not severe.

When checking into your hotel make sure to take note of the emergency exits and instructions in the hotel's room guide. Here are some more tips: 1) Don't panic.
2) When inside, stay inside and take cover. Get under a desk, table, or doorjamb to avoid falling objects.
3) When outside, take cover if you can. If you can't find anything to cover you, drop to the ground and cover your head and neck until it passes.
4) Keep away from windows and don't use elevators.
5) If in a public building, follow the lead of the employees.
