Anyone that has had the honor of working within the firearm and shooting business will be quick to tell you that the professionals within that community are likely the best people in the world. Im not sure why that is the case, but I simply cant say enough good things about the quality of those individuals. As an outdoor/ gun writer, I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to rub elbows with these fine folks.
It would be very difficult thing for any writer to compile the information and details needed for a work like this book without the assistance and support of many others in the shooting community. Those individuals take the form of friends and colleagues throughout the world, some of which are fellow hunters and others work directly within the firearms and shooting industry. Unfortunately, those individuals do not always receive the credit and appreciation that I feel they deserve. In a minor effort to correct that oversight, I would like to take this opportunity to pick out a few individuals to personally thank.
Pat Mundy, working for Leupold & Stevens in Beaverton, Oregon, is one of those rare individuals you encounter in life with which you immediately form a bond. Sharing a common interest in hunting, firearms, shooting and the fine optics that Leupold produces brought us together and helped cement our friendship. Over the years, Pat has helped me better understand the optics business and has been instrumental in assisting me with my projects. He is shining example of a hard working and dedicated professional in the business of shooting optics and I value his friendship.
It took me many years of searching before I located what I believe to be a top quality gunsmith. I found that individual in Dan Coffin of the Victor, Montana-based Coffin Gunsmithing. Dan I connected many years ago for the first time when I finally decided to build my first complete custom big bore rifle. While working together, Dan helped me to achieve that lifetime goal and we have been friends ever since. I frequently tell others that I have never given Dan a problem that he wasnt able to fix and, believe me, I have presented him with some real challenges. In every case, he found a way to help me achieve my goals and objectives and even bailed me out a few times when Ive gotten myself in trouble with my firearms. After building that first big bore, a few months later, another followed, and before I knew it, I had about a half dozen Coffin-built rifles of various styles and calibers in my collection. And, of course, as any active shooter knows, there are always smaller projects that require the abilities of a competent gunsmith, and for that reason I find myself frequently hanging around Dans shop, pestering him for assistance. He hasnt run me out yet, so I guess by now he calls me one of his friends.
To top off a fine rifle, you simply cant do without a nice checkering job and that is where Pam Wheeler, of Stevensville, Montana, came into my life. Checkering was one of few jobs that my gunsmith, Dan Coffin, chooses to farm out, and Pambeing the expert artisan that she isbecame the perfect match for both of us. She is absolutely first rate when it comes to the work she does and brings to the table a long list of impressive credentials and work history. Working through the years for many of the top gunmakers, even doing the checkering work for the late Tommy Seitz on his custom-built trap guns, Pam has added elegance to some of the best firearms in the country. Having dabbled in checkering myself, I can truly appreciate the job that Pam does and I am thankful that I never have to pick up another checkering tool as long as she is around. Most would only laugh at my checkering attempt, anyway.
I became acquainted with Tim Brandt of ATK a few years back. ATK is a giant industrial umbrella that includes many of the top sporting goods manufacturing businesses, a few of which include: Federal Ammunition, Speer Bullets, CCI, Weaver Optics, Alliant Powder, Blackhawk, Champion Traps & Targets, RCBS, and even more recently, Savage Arms. A large part of Tims role with ATK is to work with the media officials and, as such, he has helped me tremendously over the years. Not only is he a top rated business professional that does an absolute excellent job for ATK, but he is also a really great guy and friend. Whenever I need help on a project, Tim is one of the first individuals I call on. He is always willing to do whatever is necessary to help me fulfill my writing and editorial objectives and is someone that I can always count on.
Randy and Coni Brooks purchased Barnes Bullets in 1974 and still maintain a significant management force within that company. Their daughter, Jessica, works with outdoor writers on a regular basis and has provided me with assistance for many years. Aside from being part of one of the best hunting bullet companies there is, Jessie is a wonderful source of information and has always been helpful in my projects.
If you are a handloader, you know the name Hodgdon because of the fine powders the company is known for. And, if you are a gun writer, it is likely that you know the name Chris Hodgdon because of his knowledge and expertise in the business. Throughout the years, Chris has been instrumental in providing me valuable assistance pertaining to propellants. Unlike so many other handloading components, powder is complex in its makeup and, not having a chemical background, I like to have Chris at my side whenever questions arise. On various occasions he has been instrumental in helping me work through those issues.
To all of the fine individuals specifically named above and to all the many other friends and colleagues that must go unnamed in these short pages, I sincerely say thank you.
