The Sandy Lane Golf Course at the Sandy Lane Hotel in St. James ( tel. 246-432-1145) offers a 45-hole championshiop golf cours and great views from the "signature" seventh hole. The Royal Westmoreland Golf & Country Club ( tel. 246-419-7263) offers 18 holes of championshipship golf, contrasting challenges, stunning scenery and a succession of "feature holes." Barbados Golf Club , Durants, Christ Churchresorts ( tel. 246-428-8463) offers an 18-hole layout with two lakes and coral waste bunkers, par 72, restaurant, bar, warm-up nets. Almond Beach Village and Club Rockley , two of the island's all-inclusive resorts, offer nine-hole golf courses for visitors (see page 51 for contact info).

Harrison's Cave
Ride on an electric tram into Harrison's Cave ( tel. 438-6640) to explore beautiful underground waterfalls, mirror lake, and the rotunda room, where the walls of the 250-foot chamber glitter like diamonds. Or view exotic tropical birds and native monkeys at the Oughterson House Barbados Zoo Park . History buffs will delight in finding 17th-century military relics like antique cannons and signal towers around the island.
Through the Barbados National Trust's open house program, Historical Great Houses are open for public viewing from 2:30 to 5:30 pm. Entrance is $7.50. A bus tour that includes entrance and transportation from hotels is $18.75. tel. 809-426-2421.

Shopping
Barbados abounds with boutiques, galleries and shops, with department stores such as Harrison's and Cave Shepherd & Co . offering goods from around the world, particularly diamonds and Italian gold. Island specialties include handmade puppets and clay and wood figures along with colorful silk-screened prints and fabrics. Pepper sauce and Barbados rum are also high on the list of popular take-homes. Most shops are in or near Broad Street, Bridgetown.
Duty-free shops require visitors to produce their passport and airline ticket. Goods that cannot be bought over the counter dury-free are spirits, wines, tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, video sets, games, TV's and home computers.
Dining
West Indian specialties and native seafood dishes such as grilled flying fish and lobster are featured throughout the island. Bajan delicacies include cou-cou (a cornmeal and okra dish), pepperpot (a spicy stew), and jug-jug (a mixture of Guinea corn and green peas). Whether you're looking for a romantic five-star restaurant, beachfront caf or Bajan buffet, Barbados has an endless number of dining options for every palate and budget. Restaurants range from small, front-porch cafs to large, luxury hotel dining rooms. Many hotels - Sandy Lane for example - offer a barbecue served to the music of steel bands or open-air discos. Fast-food afficionados will enjoy Chefette Drive-Thru , Barbados' answer to the golden arches, open weekends from 10 am on Friday to midday Sunday. Chefette restaurants are located in Bridgetown on Fairchild Street, Fontabelle, Broad Street, Heroes Square and Marhill Street. Also in the towns of Rockley, Wildey, Oistins and Holetown.
Josef's , located in St. Lawrence Gap, Christ Church, serves fabulous gourmet fish and continental cuisine in a grand native home with a garden overlooking the sea. Meals are under $25. tel. 435-6541.
Pisces Restaurant , located in the St. Lawrence Gap on the waterfront, is noted for West Indian specialties and fabulous rum pie. tel. 435-6564.
Waterfront Caf , The Careenage, Bridgetown, serves Bajan specialties and Creole cuisine, including pepperpot and melts, plus tapas. Meals run between $25 and $40. Nice view of the docks. tel. 427-0093.
"Nu-Bajan" cuisine is served at Koko's on Prospect, St. James. Meals are under $25. Seating overlooks the ocean. tel. 424-4557.
Creole cuisine lovers should be sure to try the Brown Sugar Restaurant at the Aquatic Gap in St. Michael. Popular buffet lunch served in an old Barbadian home. Under $25. tel. 427-2329.
