Sightseeing
Day-trips to Belize's archaeological sites, the rain forest, and Belize Zoo are offered by local tour companies in Belize City and Ambergris Caye or can be arranged as part of your trip in advance. Day rates are from $100 to about $250 from Ambergris Caye or Placencia to inland sites, depending on where you are headed.
Altun Ha is the most popular Mayan ruin and least expensive from Ambergris Caye. Tours include a picnic lunch, ground and sea transportation.
El Castillo
Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock) is on the west coast about 80 miles from Belize City. This is the largest ruin unearthed in Belize. Impressive views are had from the top of El Castillo , the main pyramid. Xunantunich is accessible only by ferry, which runs from San Jose Succotz daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Trips often include a tour of the Belize Zoo and a drive around Belmopan, Belize's capital.
Caana Pyramid at Caracol
Animals at the Belize Zoo are housed in naturalistic mesh-and wood-enclosures. The animals - jaguars, pumas, toucans, spider and howler monkeys, and the mountain cow" - are all indigenous to Belize. They were originally gathered for a wildlife film. The zoo is 30 miles west of Belize City.
From Belize City, driving up the Western Highway to Mile Marker 21 will bring you to Gracie Rock , one of the sites used in the movie Mosquito Coast , where you'll find the remains of the huge icemaker blown up by Harrison Ford.
Guanacaste Park , about 50 miles southwest of Belize City, is a 50-acre parcel of tropical forest located in the Cayo District at the junction of Western Highway and Hummingbird Highway. It is named for the huge Guanacaste tree, which can reach a height of 130 feet with a trunk diameter in excess of six feet. More than a hundred species of birds have been spotted here.
Blue Hole National Park & St. Hermans Cave are 12 miles southeast of Belmopan. This inland blue hole" is popular as a recreational spot. Water, on its way to the Sibun River, emerges into the base of a collapsed sinkhole about 100 feet deep and 300 feet in diameter. St. Hermans Cave is 500 yards from the Hummingbird Highway and is accessible via a hiking trail from the blue hole. The nearest of the three known entrances is impressive - a large sinkhole funneling to a 65-foot entrance. Mayan pottery, spears and torches have been found here.
