No book of this scope could have been written without help from a variety of sources. I employed the buddy system to make this the best possible dive travel guide to the Virgin Islands and wish to thank many people.
The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board and the United States Virgin Islands Government Tourist Offices were big assets for me from the time I started research for this book. They can also be of help to future visitors, offering a wide range of printed material and advice.
A number of public relations firms and people, including FCB/Leber Katz, Barker Campbell & Farley, Development Counsellors International, Robinson, Yesawich, & Pepperdine, Scott Jones and Beth Hanssen at PADI, Ahrlene Stevens in the USVI, and many others were also helpful way beyond the normal call of duty. Sean Combs, editor of Dive Training magazine, has also been instrumental in helping me (and my column's readers) explore dive travel in the Virgin Islands and other locales.
For getting to the Virgin Islands, I can highly recommend American Airlines, Continental, and USAir. I have lots of personal experience (and frequent flier miles) with these airlines and they offer many convenient connections between the U.S. and the Virgin Islands.
I received a warm welcome everywhere I went in the Virgin Islands, but many people and places deserve specific thanks.
In the British Virgin Islands, a wide variety of resorts and restaurants welcomed me with typically British and Caribbean charm. My BVI hosts included: Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas; The Moorings; Biras Creek Estate; Bitter End Yacht Club & Resort; Little Dix Bay; Olde Yard Inn; Drake's Anchorage; and Peter Island. Dive operators who helped with the research for this book include Baskin in the Sun, Dive B.V.I., and Rainbow Visions Photography.
On St. Croix: Elizabeth Armstrong at The Buccaneer Hotel; the late Betty Sperper and her family at the King Christian Hotel; Kevin and Suzanne Ryan at the Waves at Cane Bay; and the staff of Anchor Inn, Carambola Beach Resort, Caravelle Hotel, and Villa Madeleine. Great

food, drink, and company were found at the Aqua-Lounge Club, The Buccaneer, Caf Madeleine; Kendrick's; and Top Hat. Dive operators who were particularly helpful include Anchor Dive Center, Dive St. Croix, and The Waves at Cane Bay, but all of the current operators on the island supported this project above and below the surface.
On St. John: The staff at Caneel Bay, Gallows Point, Hyatt Regency St. John, and Raintree Inn. Memorable meals were had at Le Chteau Bordeaux, Lucy's Bar & Restaurant, Ellington's, Etta's, The Fish Trap, The Lime Inn, and Pusser's. Dive operators who were eager to assist include Cruz Bay Watersports, Low Key Watersports, and Paradise Watersports, but all operators on St. John are perfect partners for a dive vacation.
On St. Thomas: Dick and Joyce Doumeng at Bolongo; the staff at Admiral's Inn, Bluebeard's Castle, Marriott's Frenchman's Reef, Grand Palazzo, Hotel 1829, Point Pleasant, Ramada Yacht Haven Hotel & Marina, Sapphire Beach, and Stouffer Grand Beach. I had delicious meals at Agave Terrace, Entre Nous, Eunice's Terrace, For the Birds, Hard Rock Caf, Hotel 1829, Victor's New Hideout, and many more. Dive operators that deserve a special mention include Billy Bad Watersports, Chris Sawyer, and Dive In.
This book would not have been possible without the support of Kim Andr at Hunter Publishing, who believes scuba diving should be a major part of any vacation experience in the Virgin Islands.
My favorite buddy above and below the surface is my wife, Cele. Through this project, we both developed an immense love for everything in the Virgin Islands. I hope this book leads to the same love by dive travelers who use it.
I tried to include everything a dive traveler would need to plan a succesful trip to the Virgin Islands. However, prices, schedules and staff change, and I recommend calling operators and hotels before booking a flight. Please send any information (including updates, corrections, and new operators, hotels or dining establishments) that you feel should be added to the next edition to: Lynn Seldon Jr., c/o Hunter Publishing, 300 Raritan Center Parkway, Edison NJ 08818.
