Introduction

Ill never forget my grandmother teaching me how to knit as a young girl. She was truly a master knitter who could conceptualize a pattern in her head, and in almost no time create a beautiful knitted garment.

As she was teaching me how to knit, I remember one day asking her why she knit. It was a moment when I thought I had asked her to explain to me the secret to life. Her response was given with a knowing smile as she explained that the process of knitting made her happy. The act of knitting (as opposed to the final knitted object) brought her happiness. What a concept.

This simple truth that my grandmother explained to me years ago is something that the contributing artists who have convened for this book, Art Saves, profoundly understand. Each of the contributors are master creators in their respective fields from mixed-media, altered art, photography, art quilting, art jewelry, crochet, lettering arts, and digital arts. They are: Kelly Rae Roberts, Lynn Whipple, Susannah Conway, Robert Dancik, Karen Michel, Rebecca Sower, Michael deMeng, Sarah Hodsdon, Suzi Blu, Stephanie Lee, Susanna Gordon, Marie French, Susan Tuttle, Lisa Engelbrecht, Jette Clover, Melody Ross, Christine Mason Miller, LK Ludwig, Drew Emborsky, and yours truly.

As you read through this book, you will find that many of the artists offer the how, in terms of the stellar projects that they teach through the presentation of beautiful photographs and well-written instructions. More importantly, what all of the artists offer is to go beyond the how and explain the unique circumstances that they have experienced, in order to get to the universal why which is that through the creative process, we not only find happiness, but also we find meaning, hope, and a way to connect to ourselves and to others.

The contributors also offer compelling Pay it Forward ideas. These thoughts are written in each artists words, and they challenge us to think beyond ourselves, nudging us to widen the circle of creativity and invite others to experience and understand the significance of the creative process and how indeed, art saves.

Kelly Rae Roberts:
Possibilitarian

Sometimes, in order to become who you are destined to be, you need to push aside all the self-doubt, all the fear, and courageously embrace the power of putting pen to paper, brush to canvas, and dreams into tangible plans. This is exactly what Kelly Rae Roberts did as she found ways of thinking big, and simultaneously disciplining herself to take small and methodical steps toward success. Her story demonstrates that art is faithful to those who remain determined and work hard.
