First and foremost, I must thank Scott DeGarmo, the publisher and editor in chief of Success magazine, who decided that there should be a column in each issue of Success devoted to entrepreneurship. He asked me to become the author. Scott's enthusiasm for my messages to entrepreneurs became the seedbed from which this book was born. It was his idea to publish as a book all the articles and stories I have written for entrepreneurs.
Second, I must acknowledge Bo Burlingham who, as executive editor of Inc. magazine in 1985, encouraged me to begin writing about entrepreneurship. Without enormous support and help from Bo and our mutual friend George Gendron, the editor of Inc., my scribbling would never have seen the light of day. It was through Bo and George that I met Bernie Goldhirsh, the owner of Inc., who, in 1987, made me publisher and forever changed my life.
