Introduction
As we write this introduction, Vermont is deep in snow, its country towns snug under feather beds, its waterfalls frozen to the rocks. Inside the towns are the same, whether the seasons paint them white, green, or orange on the outside. And even in the time of year we call, with characteristic directness, mud season, the towns are attractive to look at and to be in.
As they lie deep in winter snow, many of them swann with skiers, and many others close to popular ski areas welcome tired skiers to the firesides of their inns and restaurants. For the "white gold" sustains the Vermont economy in winter just as its legendary maple leaves do in the fall and its moderate temperatures and fresh mountain air do in the summer. People like to come to Vermont, in any season.
But no matter how deeply the life of a town seems rooted in welcoming tourists, there is still a life underneath, a life that goes on year-round, in snowless winters when the skiers don't come, in hard times and good. It is the real fiber of a town, the school board, selectmen (no, in Vermont all towns have not neutered their vocabulary, either officially or colloquially), the fire department, the library, the churches, the historical society, the general store, the farms, the manufacturing plants, the neighbors, and the families all woven together into a fabric far stronger and far richer than the idyllic community a passing traveler sees.
It is this Vermont we have tried to capture in Country Towns of Vermont. Through the stories, the history, the buildings, the local places and activities of 12 of these towns, we have tried to show what makes Vermont what it is. Perhaps it is true that you must live here to understand Vermont, but
