Introduction
First things first: Kentucky is an ideal state for country roads traveling, with its varied landscape, appealing little towns, and people who like to talk to strangers. The state parks are excellent and make a good base for travelers who like to get out of their cars and explore the countryside.
Driving around, you'll see miles and miles of beautiful country; from the white fences, black barns, and rich pastureland around Lexington to the mountains, deep gorges, and waterfalls in the eastern highlands; from the river towns along the banks of the Ohio to the cypress swamps farther south. There are green hills and valleys, rocky cliffs, caves, forests, rivers, lakes, and fast-flowing streams, and many small delights, such as wild roses and mockingbirds, along the way.
Now is the time to see all this, while rural and regional differences remain distinct. Some of the nicest sights may not last much longerferries, for instance, and covered bridges, and band concerts in small-town parks.
This being a revised edition, some recent observations are in order.
Six years separate the present book from the first edition published in 1993, so it's hardly a surprise that changes have occurred, both large and small. For instance:
The Louisville Slugger Museum, with its giant baseball bat leaning against the building, opened in Louisville in 1996 and drew crowds from the start.
