My body is dancing to the songs of the country, the church bell that rings every Sunday at nine, to baseball and bike riding through the middle of town past the one-family store with the awnings pulled down.

Introduction
The classic story about road travel tells of a local who answers a lost stranger's question with, "Nope, you can't get there from here." Variations include, "Well, are you Republican or Democrat?" and "Depends on where you're from.'' Touring back roads challenges the impossible, like the man who stopped his horse and hay load at the entrance to a covered bridge, studied the scene, turned, and left. He figured he could get into the bridge all right, but just couldn't squeeze through the hole at the other end. Perspective is allthe reason that some lovers of New England say, "Why travel when I'm already here?"
Why travel through New Hampshire? There are lots of reasons, the first being that this extraordinary state offers endless stories to discover and histories to study. Rural New Hampshire also contains a sumptuous number of lakes, rivers, marshes, and mountains, including the White Mountain Range, with the highest peak in the Northeast; Lake Winnipesaukee, among the largest in-state lakes in the nation; Grand Monadnock, with a six-state view; the craggy seacoast's tidal inlets; and the gorgeous gorges of Franconia and Crawford Notches. The list goes on and on: pristine ponds, inscrutable swamps, wildlife wilderness.
