Acknowledgments
I'd like to thank the people of the state of Pennsylvania for making me one of their own and for sharing their secrets with me. It would be impossible for me to enumerate all those who have been so generous with their time and knowledge, but in particular I'd like to express my gratitude to the many state and local tourism officials who work long and hard and who rendered invaluable assistance.

Introduction
The road less taken is a siren call to those of us whose lives are proscribed by a daily round of work and obligations. The desire to break away, to discover a new direction, a fresh compass heading, is a chance to reawaken the explorer in all of us. We can't chart the Northwest Passage as Lewis and Clark did, or hunt for the Seven Golden Cities of Cbola, but we can bypass the interstates and venture up that backcountry road.
With more miles of state-maintained highway than New York and the New England states combined, Pennsylvania provides a splendid opportunity to discover out-of-the-way places. You can go antiquing, descend beneath the surface of the earth in a coal mine, dip your toes into one of the Great Lakes, or watch hawks and eagles as they soar on thermals over fall-flamed mountains. You can discover an elegant inn or hole up in a secluded bed-and-breakfast; you can dine on haute cuisine or belly up to the counter in an old-fashioned diner. There are wilderness trails to hike and wide Victorian porches to laze away a summer afternoon.
This guide has been researched and written to give you an idea of the many alternatives available throughout the state during every season of the year. Each chapter opens with a routing and a description of area highlights. In making a selection of roads to follow and stopping points along the way, we haven't attempted comprehensive coverage. The choices are selective, aimed at giving the reader a sample of the many elements of geography, history, and heritage that define Pennsylvania's singular appeal.
