Introduction
Introduction to the Second Edition
It was with great pleasure that I returned to Florida to revise this guide. I never tire of driving along the backroads of the state and exploring both familiar and new sites. Although it had only been a few years since I drove the roads included in the first edition, there were some noticeable changes in the towns along several routes. Sebring has been undergoing a building boom that threatens to change its quiet, almost sleepy tempo to a pace as frantic as the Orlando area's farther north, and the beach communities of the Panhandle have been changed by the tremendous hurricane forces that swept through the region in the intervening years.
None of this makes the back roads of the state any less attractive, however, and even the most experienced tourists can find new and unusual spots to explore in this delightful state. One word of warningbed-and-breakfasts, small hotels, and restaurants have a high turnover rate, so those you read of here may or may not be in operation when you visit.
