: INTRODUCTION
Ive always been a geek. Growing up with a mom who writes science fiction, a dad who programs computers, and a brother who never met a gifted and talented program he wasnt accepted into, I didnt really have much of a choice! While most kids were packing for summer camp, I was packing for sci-fi conventions with my family. While my girlfriends would swoon over Christian Slater and Leonardo DiCaprio, I had posters of Jonathan Brandis from seaQuest DSV and Wil Wheaton from Star Trek over my bed.As a kid, I sometimes tried to hide my nerdiness. But as an adult, Ive come to embrace it.

I spend most of my day geeking out over books, the newest cell phones, and the latest science fiction series on TV. I love going to sci-fi conventions and seeing the amazing handmade costumes, props, jewelry, and, yes, knitwear that adorn almost every convention goer. Its a haven for not only nerds but crafty people as well! This book is my gushy love letter to the nerd community. Every pattern is inspired by the things cool kids think are geeky and the geeky people think are cool. Whether you want to give a subtle nod to your rebel love with a girly version of a Firefly-inspired Brown Coat, finish off your elf costume with a gorgeous lacy shrug, or cuddle with your very own plush robot, these patterns have something for every kind of nerd!

: ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book would not have been possible without the hard work of a lot of people. First and foremost, my agent, Kate Epstein, who would not let a passing comment about a nerdy knitting book pass.

My awesome editor, Lane, who has been amazing throughout this process; my tech editor, Ann; and the super talented Holly Ogden at Andrews McMeel, who got the design of this book.Neil Gaiman, for letting a gaggle of roller girls and photographers take over his quiet country home for an entire weekend so the pictures in this book could have an amazing backdrop. And the fabulous Lorraine Garland, who made that weekend happen. Also, my gorgeous modeling friends, Megan (Dora the Destroyer) Gill, Summer (Jane Ire) Keown, Melia (Kickabroad Crane) White, Ashley (Veronica Dodge) Wilkewitz, Daisy Pignetti, Michelle Markquart and her horse Big Al, Dan (Dill Her0) Carr, Will Hodges, Ray Baxter, Shannon Moore, Chris Pohl, Sarah Emmelman, Lorraine (Quiche MeDeadly) Garland, Michelle Pemberton, Baby Elise, and, of course, Princess the cat.My incredibly nerdy friend Dylan Roahrig, who knows everything there is to know about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Seriously. Quiz him. A special shout-out to Lorrie Levesque, who had to test-knit an incredibly long scarf! One of the best parts of this book was working with two of the most talented photographers on the planet, Tom Klubens and Marc Lebryk. Amazing work, guys.Last, but not least, the designers who helped make this book what it is.

Im proud to have such talented people in my corner.

ALCHEMY SCARF

I have a major nerd love for vampire fiction. I have read just about any and every vampire book out there, so its rare for one to take me by surprise. The YA novel Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead did just that. With an awesome twist on the vampire and dhampir legends, it really made an impression on me.The inspiration for this scarf comes from that series.
