Introduction
"My mom was choking me. She had her hands tight around my neck, and I could barely breathe," recalls Bethany. "I broke away from her and tried to call the police, but she grabbed the phone out of my hand and started smacking me really hard.
"She had been drinking again. When she was drunk, she could get crazy and violent.
"'You've got a choice,' my mom said. 'You break up with Josh, or you get out of this house!'
"I think my mom didn't like my boyfriend Josh just because of the way he looked he had a shaved head and a couple of tattoos. But Josh was a really nice guy. My mom was being so unfair. She kept slapping me until she felt as though I had gotten the message."

"Over the next few days, I made a plan to runaway," says Bethany. "Josh had an older friend who said that I could live with him for a few days. I didn't know what I would do after that, but I figured I'd get by somehow. Anything seemed better than being at home. I felt as if I had to go."
Who Are the Runaways?
In the next twenty-four hours, close to 3,000 teens will run away. Every day, there are over a million teenage runaways living in the United States.
A runaway is defined as a person who leaves his or her home or place of residence for one or more nights without the permission of a parent or legal guardian. A homeless youth has parents who are also homeless. A homeless runaway, then, does not even have a home to return to. A "throwaway" or "lockout" is a runaway who has been thrown out of his or her home; the parents or guardians do not wish for him or her to return. A throwaway's parents or guardians might also be deceased or in jail.
All kinds of people run away: male, female, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American. Runaways come from both single-parent and two-parent households. Some leave big, comfortable homes behind, whereas others are the children of homeless parents. Most runaway teenagers come from troubled families.
