The expanded practices and new roles which nurses are currently undertaking are often in areas in which a sound knowledge of the life sciences is essential. This book examines a number of advanced nursing skills, in each case describing the research evidence upon which the procedures discussed are based as well as the practical aspects of the procedures themselves. The knowledge of the life sciences that underpins these skills is also presented in each chapter and is always clearly linked to the advanced practices described. Although aimed primarily at post registered nurses, nurses undergoing pre-registration nurse education will find this book helpful as they themselves will be involved to a limited extent in the practices described.

Preface
The initiative for the development of this book arose from the production of a series of distance learning packages designed to examine a number of advanced nursing skills. The learning packages were designed for nurses working in one Hospital Trust who had expanded their roles into a number of different clinical areas. At the time of the development of the packages, the Assistant Director of Nursing was concerned that her nursing staff were increasingly becoming involved in practical skills previously seen as medical territory, but lacked the necessary knowledge to make the professional decisions they were frequently required to make. Therefore, a central aim of the packages was to provide staff with the knowledge underpinning the practical skills in which they were involved, enabling them to exercise the professional judgements expected of them in the practice setting. The distance learning material that was eventually developed was positively received and has since been circulated and used in a number of hospital trusts.
Although there is coverage of some areas of expanded practice in some of the nursing journals, there would appear to be few books available examining these advanced nursing skills. Therefore, it was decided to develop the distance learning material into a book.

The author has attempted to bring together widely available information into a single, easy to use, practice-based text. It should not be used in isolation but in conjunction with local policies and guidelines. It is hoped, that by identifying the knowledge base which underpins each of the advanced nursing skills described, along with the research evidence upon which each is based, that practitioners will be helped to feel competent in the many areas of expanded practice in which they are often involved.
