Preface
This book is written specifically for the nurse prescriber. However, many of the pharmaceutical products described within this text can be purchased "over-the-counter". Therefore, any nurse involved in advising the general public on common health care problems may find this text helpful.
Nurses working within the expanded role of prescriber will frequently be faced with prescribing decisions. This text provides easily accessible information upon which to base these decisions, ensuring safe and effective prescribing practices.
Each chapter examines the different groups of preparations listed in the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary. Information including product dosage, contraindications, side-effects, drug interactions and specific nursing points is presented. However, this text is perhaps unique, in that the reader is also provided with associated knowledge from the life sciences.
The authors have attempted to bring together widely available information into a single, easy to use, practice-based text. It should not be used in isolation but in conjunction with the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary, the Drug Tariff and manufacturers' product information sheets. References are not extensive, although they are supplied at relevant points throughout the text.
