Chris Backe

Im Chris Backe I travel, write, and otherwise exploring the dynamic world of Asia.

From March 2008 to March 2013 I lived in South Korea, where I kept the blog Chris in South Korea and traveled somewhere new once a week. I wrote the book - literally - on the oddball and bizarre places around the country. See that at www.weirdandwonderfulkorea.net.

In March 2013, my wife and I moved to Bangkok and began traveling somewhere new around Thailand once a week. As you might expect, there's a blog about Thailand - Chris in Thailand. I've taken some wonderful trips to Malaysia and Laos, and am looking forward to more traveling!

9:00 am -- Lao National Museum
  • Price: LAK 20000.00 (for a single adult)
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Address: Samsenthai road, Anou, Chanthabuly, Vientiane

This is one case where the building pre-dates the museum. First built in 1925, as the colonial police commissioners office, the French architecture has aged fairly gracefully. Over the decades, the building served as headquarters for the government, the Kings house, and the Prime Ministers office. In December 1980, the building became an exhibition hall of the revolution, and was later renamed a museum. It was 2000, when the building became the Lao National Museum, complete with 8,000 artifacts and five major sections.

No photographs are allowed inside, and dont expect an impartial view of the countrys relatively short modern history. It's as good a summary of the country's history as you'll get, however.

Perhaps the highlight is outside - an exquisite piece of carved wood from Lak Sao Village. At 4 meters tall and 2.8 meters wide, the hard wood trunk features dozens, if not hundreds, of glimpses into traditional Lao life and culture - new year processions, drinking liquor, Buddhist temples, elephants, and plenty more.

11:00 am -- Lunch and walking
  • Price: LAK 15000.00 (for a single adult)
  • Duration: 1 hour

From the museum, head left (east) and look for the clump of restaurants around 200 meters away. Take your pick of the cafes and restaurants there, then continue on.

The Pizza Company is fine but imported and overpriced, while you may enjoy the Scandinavian Bakery or the Sinouk Cafe instead. I'd head to the Scandinavian Bakery for pastries or a sandwich (starting at 15,000 kip) - no need for anything too heavy before a day of walking.

12:00 pm -- That Dam

Keep walking in the same directions for another 150 meters, turning left onto Chantakoummane street. Walk to the roundabout and take in That Dam - yes, that is the stupas real name.

Make all the jokes about the name you like - its not as funny when you remember - photo 7

Make all the jokes about the name you like - its not as funny when you remember th is pronounced just like t. Taht Dahm isnt as funny, but thats closer to the correct pronunciation.

The stupa was supposedly once covered in gold, which was pillaged by the Siamese in 1828. The stone stupa today is a several-story pile of stones, though some locals supposedly believe theres a seven-headed naga inside that attempted to protect the country.

12:30 pm -- From That Dam to Talat Sao

When finished, face the stupa, then head around it to the right - take the first right onto Bartholomie street. Pass the US embassy, then at the 'T', head left onto Lan Xang. At the next four-way intersection, you should see Talat Sao, the morning market / big shopping mall, on the opposite corner. Cross there and then find your way inside.
