Flora of the Northeast: A Manual of the Vascular Flora of New England and Adjacent New York: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Flora of the Northeast: A Manual of the Vascular Flora of New England and Adjacent New York" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Designed as both a reference work and a year-round field manual, this volume contains more than 2,400 range maps and 995 line drawings, designed to clarify descriptions used in the keys. For botanists, naturalists, and students interested in an up-to-date treatment of the vascular flora of greater New England, it has proved to be an invaluable resource. The geographic scope of the work extends from the Canadian border south through Long Island and west to the Hudson River. The General Keys section contains fourteen keys that include such groups as aquatic plants, vines, and woody plants in winter condition. For both woody and herbaceous families, the keys cover flowering as well as fruiting conditions and rely heavily on the use of vegetative features to extend the utility of the book beyond the reproductive period. The Descriptive Flora section includes keys to all of the genera and species, descriptions of the families and genera, and accounts of the individual species. The latter incorporates information on wetland site index, rare status, wildlife food value, food and medicinal value for humans, and poisonous or hallucinogenic properties. This revised edition includes an updating of plant scientific names that changed since the first edition and an alphabetized list of plant families with page numbers on the inside front cover for easy reference. This edition also includes a new CD-ROM with a multiple-entry identification guide, hundreds of accompanying photographic images of genera, an illustrated glossary, and page reference numbers to genus descriptions in the manual. Presenting a wealth of scientifically accurate information in a precise and clear format, this volume serves as a reference work, as a textbook for classes in plant identification, and as a field manual.

Preface
Background and Scope of the Manual
The work on this manual was begun by Harry Ahles in the mid-1970s. As an instructor of courses in field identification of vascular plants at the University of Massachusetts he prepared keys to various plant groups as a teaching aid. Renowned for his abilities in field taxonomy, Mr. Ahles emphasized identification of plants in sterile as well as reproductive condition in his teaching. Accordingly, his approach in designing his keys was to construct them using vegetative as well as flowering and fruiting characters whenever possible, and to make them as simple as possible. Prior to joining the University of Massachusetts' botany department he had co-authored the ''Vascular Flora of the Carolinas" and had also authored or co-authored other botanical books and journal articles. His goal was to produce a manual similar to the Carolinas' "Flora" for New England, using a similar format and design. However, Mr. Ahles felt that the scope of the work should be based more on natural physiogeographic boundaries and plant distribution limits than on cultural or political boundaries. The area of treatment of this manual, therefore, extends slightly beyond New England, from Canada, to and including Long Island, west to the Hudson River.
At the time of Mr. Ahles' untimely death in early 1981, he had prepared a preliminary draft of keys for many of the taxa. A copy of his preliminary draft of keys has been placed in the University of Massachusetts main library archives in the faculty manuscripts section. He had also completed an herbarium search to gather distribution information, visiting all of the major herbaria throughout New England and New York. This distribution information resides in 12 ring-binder notebooks at the University of Massachusetts herbarium. In 1983 I was approved by the head of the University of Massachusetts' botany department and Mr. Ahles' family to complete the work.
Preparation of a finished flora from the preliminary draft of keys and distribution information left by Mr. Ahles required completing the keys, updating the plant names, updating the distributions and preparing distribution maps, coordinating preparation of the illustrations, and writing all other sections that are necessary parts of a finished flora.
Although Mr. Ahles had intended to publish a book containing only keys and distribution information, I have also prepared descriptions of the families and genera in the interest of producing a more complete work that will fulfill a wider range of needs. The descriptions pertain only to those taxa represented in the greater New England area, and do not include information for taxa occurring beyond the range limits of this manual.
