Introduction

For most home cooks, the only problem that they face today is the lack of time. Cooking is a time consuming process considering that there are several foods that cook slowly and take several minutes to be done to perfection. However, with the introduction of pressure cooking, you can not only save time but also make your favorite dishes every single day.

Whether you are someone juggling between your home, kids and work or just a single person who has absolutely no time to wait for the food to cook, pressure cooking is the ideal choice for you. Instead of spending loads of money eating unhealthy food outside, making a small investment on a pressure cooker is highly recommended. You can try out several recipes, including the ones you really love and have them all ready in just a couple of minutes. Pressure cooking is so convenient that several experienced cooks and chefs are turning to it for some much needed assistance.

The electric pressure cooker, especially, is the most convenient kitchen gadget to have. Not only does it consume very little storage space, it is also extremely easy to clean. As for the cooking, the taste is just as good as your regular stove pressure cooker. In addition to that, your electric pressure cooker does everything for you from adjusting the cooking time to keeping your dish warm after it is completely done.

Unlike the traditional cooker, where a good deal of time is consumed in bringing the cooker up to temperature before setting the timer and actually depressurizing it after your dish is done, the electric cooker is completely independent after you have pushed the start button. There is no need to babysit your electric pressure cooker. And whats best is that there is no fear of the cooker bursting, leaving your walls, cupboard and ceiling splattered with all the contents of your favorite food.

With an electric pressure cooker, all it takes is a bit of practice to understand how it works. Until you are sure, there are several manuals that can take you through the exact process of making your electric cooker the handiest equipment that you have ever owned. There are several new types and models that are released regularly. Each one has several more programs that make it more convenient.

For a basic overview of an electric pressure cooker, read the following chapters. The most important thing to inspire you to consider an electric pressure cooker is the fact that you can get lunch or dinner ready in 1/3rd the time you would have taken otherwise. Of course, there are several other benefits like reduced consumption of resources that you can make use of when you buy an electric pressure cooker.

What is an Electric Pressure Cooker?
The History of Pressure Cooking

The first attempt to use steam to reduce the time taken to cook was made in the year 1679 by French Physicist Denis Papin. Paipin invented a device known as the steam digester which worked on a principle similar to the pressure cooker that we use today. He devised an airtight cooker that worked by increasing the boiling point of water using steam. This resulted in faster cooking. Unfortunately, this benchmark in cooking technology was not considered a scientific study when he presented it to the Royal Society of London. It was only much later that he was accepted as the member of this society.

The earliest known pressure cookers were manufactured by George Sutbrod in Stuttgart in 1864. He made pressure cookers out of cast iron. Although there were so many initial designs and concepts presented with regard to pressure cooking, the first patent for pressure cooking was received in the year 1919. It was granted to Jose Alix Martinez by Spain. It was named olla express which when translated means express cook pot.

Pressure cookers became available for home use only in 1938 when Alfred Vischler designed the Flex Seal Speed Cooker in New York City. Vischler presented this design as the first pressure cooker specifically designed for safe use at home. The pressure cooker received a lot of success which set European and American Manufacturers after it. The first pressure cooker manufactured for home use was unveiled at the New York Worlds Fair at 1939. It was presented by the National Presto Industries which was then known as the National Pressure Cooker Company. This was the first company to manufacture its own pressure cookers.

Pressure Cookers and the World War

It was when America was about to enter the Second World that manufacturing of pressure cookers came to a standstill. During this period any facility that was meant for civilian use was converted to make way for war production. While cookers were not manufactured anymore, canners became more and more popular commercially. The GIs overseas began to demand for more commercial pressure canners during this time.
