Acknowledgements
When I first approached Doug Flutie about writing this book he had lukewarm interest. "I don't think my life's that interesting," he said matter-of-factly.
Imagine someone who has met Ronald Reagan and George Bush and talked football with them, had Donald Trump pursue him with a record $8.3 million contract, played drums with Jon Bon Jovi, had Saturday Night Live parody him, and captured the attention of an entire continent of sports fans with a single play, saying he didn't have an interesting life! But that is Doug Flutie, who can best be described as a tremendous athlete with a modest ego.
Doug Flutie's accomplishments beginning with his exploits in college, in which he transformed an unranked school into a national contender, then continuing into a record-setting pro career have made him one of the all-time greats in football history. Flutie is so respected, both as an individual and an athlete, that the likes of Donald Trump, Mike Ditka and Tom Coughlin generously gave of their time to be interviewed for this book. In particular, Tom Coughlin (head coach of the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars), was effusive in his praise of Doug and added: "Don't hesitate to call if you need anything else." As a sports journalist I can attest that this kind response to an interview is very rare.
Doug Flutie may be modest about himself and what he has done in his life, but there are enough people who are willing to trumpet his accomplishments. Ultimately, however, this book would not have happened without Doug's willingness and cooperation.
