ABOUT THE EDITOR AND CONTRIBUTORS
MARJORIE MANDELSTAM BALZER (Ph.D., anthropology, 1979) is Research Professor at Georgetown University in the Sociology Department and the Center for Eurasian, Russian, and East European Studies (CERES), where she coordinates the CERES program "Social, Regional, and Ethnic Issues." She is editor of the M.E. Sharpe journal Anthropology and Archeology of Eurasia and of the books Culture Incarnate: Native Anthropology from Russia (1995); and Russian Traditional Culture (1992). She has done several years of fieldwork in the former Soviet Union, beginning in 1975, especially in western Siberia (with the Ob-Ugrian Khanty, 1976, 1991) and the Far East (Sakha Republic, Yakutia, 1986, periodically each year 1991-95). She writes on religion, nationalism, and gender in the former Soviet Union.
VLADIMIR NIKOLAEVICH BASILOV is a well-known Russian ethnographer, head of the Section of Central Asian and Kazakhstan Research in the Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow. Basilov's main field sites are in Central Asia, with focus on Uzbekistan and extensive comparative knowledge of Kazakhstan and Siberia. He is author of many books and articles, including
