Introduction
See it, Believe it, Do it
Travel writing? Brilliant! Seeing the world, getting paid, where do you start? You took the first step when you opened this book. It will point you in the right direction but dont dream of a free vacation just yet. Wait until youve reached the last page. The truth is that travel writers are never on vacation. They get up at dawn, rush around making notes and taking pictures then spend the evening at their laptop. Its hard work but it is a wonderful life and the more effort you put in, the greater the reward.
Are you ready for the challenge? Do you love traveling, exploring, hovering here and there like a butterfly? Would you like to share your adventures and earn some cash along the way?
Youve come to the right place
Travel features are short-term projects, a gift for busy people. Each one claims only a few hours of your time, a couple of days at most, leaving you free to travel, enjoy life and fit in other commitments. They can be as varied and exciting as you wish, perfect for fluttering minds and travelers on the move.
Hop on a plane, hire a bike, relax in a spa and when you come home, write a feature or two and re-live the experience. Twice the pleasure, but this time its free. Get it right and an editor will buy.
Lets get creative
Travel writing is creative. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. Words are your tools and like a painters palette, how you use them reflects your personality and view of the world. You and I could visit the same place, have the same experience yet describe it in a totally different way.
Be yourself, write about your passion, share your stories with family, colleagues and friends but best of all, see your name in print, your words and pictures on the page, or on the web, as you entertain and inform readers from every sphere of life. Sounds good?
Simple skills for everyone
This book will lead you step by step on the road to publication from early planning and research to photography, from ideas and style to pleasing editors so they will buy your work. Begin to build your portfolio, learn where and how to network and you will realize that the old adage comes true: Success Breeds Success.
There will be a few ups and downs. I have them too but lets call them challenges and enjoy. Like most things in life, determination wins in the end.
Why features?
Let me share a secret: I started with a book. It was turned down 36 times but a kind publisher pointed out great potential for features, a dozen or more, if I got it right. I took the advice and never looked back.
So for most of us, regardless of age, purpose or destination, new to the trade or published in a different field, writing features is the easiest way to break into the genre. Gap year, family vacation, grand tour of Europe, culture fan, adventurer or beach lover, every experience is packed with article ideas.
