I dedicate this book to Ray Mansfield, the renaissance man
warrior, who helped me through all those challenging (winning
and losing) years with the Steelers and, afterwards, who joined
me on our journey of self-discovery through adventure travel
and challenge.

Acknowledgments
There are virtually too many people to thank. I appreciate all the encouragement my business partners and friends gave me during the two years it took write this book. Many of them read my pitiful first efforts and still offered suggestions and the supportive comments that I needed. I found writing to be very humbling but tremendously challenging and rewardingin a sense, a lot like playing football.
I would like to especially thank my writing mentor, Phil Musick who spent many hours reading and making suggestions. My best friends, Cindy Ellis, Ray Mansfield, Jack and Susan Musgrave, Sam Zacharias and Jim Card were always supportive and willing to give constructive criticism. Pete Gent, a real author, and former Cowboy, also helped with ideas and suggestions, as did my writer friend Roy Blount Jr. who once wrote another book about the Steelers. My good friend Myron Cope also offered helpful suggestions. Family members who read these pieces before they were edited and resisted criticizing my fledgling efforts to write are also to be thanked: Amy, Andy and Nancy Russell, and my parents, William and Esther Russell. Friends and business partners, Don Rea and Jeff Kendall also gave good counsel.

Foreword
An observation I've come to appreciate is that we all record history from our own perspectives. It is neither good nor bad, right nor wrong. It just is. We process information by how it impacts us. Then we either write it or orally transfer it from our point of view, to those who are willing to listen.
We do it all the time. Two people can view the same situation, and when questioned about the event, come up with two completely different scenarios.
I experienced that phenomenon all the time when I was playing for the Steelers. After every home game, and right after Chuck Noll gave his summation of the win or loss, a majority of the guys would then head for the sauna. As beers were opened, playersin various stages of undresswould discuss the contest we just left, I wondered sometimes if the dialogue was about the same game in which I just played.
