Just As You Are

By Sam Singer

Jesse tugs her skirt down nervously and looks at her baby blue phone sitting innocently on the end table. As nervous as she is, a person would think this is the first time she has called Brandon, but its not. Brandon isnt even her first boyfriend, but since her last one, she has been more guarded about herself. Jesses last boyfriend Mark had been a bad boy; that was what had been so attractive about him. Once Jesse realized her feelings for him were deepening, she decided to tell him the truth about herself, that she is Transgendered. When she told him, he beat her badly, after he told her she was disgusting and a freak.

But Brandon is nothing like Mark.

She and Brandon have been dating for five months, and Jesse has never known Brandon to be violent or angry, but what guy wouldnt get angry when he learns what Jesse has been keeping from him? Jesse knows shes already head over heels for Brandon, which is why shes decided she cant keep her secret from him any longer. She shouldve been honest with him from the start. She always swore she would be honest with the men in her life, but shes fallen so hard and fast for Brandon that fear of losing him has her in its grip.

Brandon is a great guy; kind-hearted, generous, loyal, and honest as the day is long. It also doesnt hurt that hes hot as Texas in August. Hes a good ol boy and a total gentleman, wouldnt even kiss Jesse until theyd been out a handful of times. He always opens doors and pulls out chairs for her, and always pays, even if most times he cant afford it. Brandon quit school to get a job and help take care of his mother when she was diagnosed with cancer when Brandon was sixteen. Brandon dreams of owning his own construction company one day, and works toward that goal by working construction part-time and taking classes at night to get his GED.

Jesse loops a strand of her dark honey hair behind her ear and reaches for her phone with a shaking hand. She scrolls through her contacts until she gets to Brandon. Her stomach flips as her thumb hovers over the call button.

Brandon has always been honest with her, from the first day they met when he told her he already had a girlfriend, but once he realized he felt more for Jesse than friendship, he broke up with Caroline. Brandon has been with Jesse since. Brandons honesty only adds to her guilt about keeping him in the dark.

Her vision blurs and scalding tears race down her freckled cheeks. Whats she supposed to do? Tell him now and lose him, or put it off until he finds out on his own and she still loses him? She puts her phone back down on the table and curls up on the sofa, holding the teddy bear Brandon won for her at the fair a month ago. She cant silence the sobs and doesnt even try. Gradually, they taper off and, before she realizes it, shes asleep.

Jesse jerks awake. Her apartment is bathed in the warm, orange glow of early evening. She looks around for what awakened her and the answer comes a moment later when the buzzer to her building sounds. She rubs her eyes and stands, wondering who could be wanting to come upshe isnt expecting anyone. She takes a quick look at herself in the mirror. Her eyes are a little red, her face has creases from the throw pillow, and her hair is messed up. She runs her fingers through her long hair, trying to make herself look more presentable.

The buzzer sounds again. Jesse sighs at her still slightly disheveled appearance before walking to the intercom. Who is it? she asks, pressing the button.

Its Brandon.

Jesses mouth goes dry. Her heart speeds up and her stomach drops to her shoes. Brandon?

Yeah. You remember me, right? Theres warmth and laughter in his voice, as always. It makes Jesse flush and her cock give an interested twitch.

Youre kinda unforgettable, Jesse says back, grinning despite the heavy weight in her chest. Brandon coming here on his own is a sign, Jesse knows. She has to tell him the truth.

Brandon laughs again. So buzz me up, Jesse.

Jesse swallows before pressing the button to unlock the downstairs door so Brandon can come up.

A few moments later, there is a rhythmic knock on the door. Jesse opens it and sees her tall, handsome, perfect boyfriend smiling broadly, dimples digging lines in his cheeks, soulful brown eyes sparkling with warmth and affection and maybe a deeper emotion that makes Jesses heart stutter. His arms come around her and his mouth takes hers in a soft kiss. She stiffens for a moment, caught off guard, before she melts into him, lips parting for Brandons tongue when it asks for entrance.

Hey, he says once they separate. His hands rest on her hips and he smiles gently down at her.

Didum, did we have plans tonight? she asks, looking away from his trusting gaze.

Nope, Brandon says, leaning in and nuzzling her neck. Just wanted to see my girl.

At that Jesse bursts into tears, the weight of her secret just too much.

Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa, Brandon says, arms tightening around Jesse as she sobs into his chest, her tears dampening the material of his shirt. Jesse, baby, whats wrong? His voice is laced with concern.

She wraps her arms around him tight, knowing this is the last time shes going to have him in her arms. I have something to tell you, she says between sobs, not able to look at him.

Okay, so tell me, Brandon says softly, hands running up and down her back.

Jesse gently pulls from his strong, reassuring embrace. She sniffles and, with as much courage as she has, looks into Brandons eyes. III was born a male.
