CJ was thrilled! He couldnt wait to sleep outside underthe stars. He spent the afternoon building a fire pit. Then Dad helped him set up the tent. They brought out sleeping bags, pillows, lawn chairs, and roasting sticks. Finally, CJs best friends Aidan and Sienna arrived. Mom and Dad went inside while the kids roasted hot dogs. This is awesome! Sienna exclaimed.Slowly the sky darkened. Stars winked overhead.
Crickets chirped in the grass. Aidan hugged himself. Im scared, he whispered.CJ sat up proudly. Well, Im not scared of anything. Only babies are scared of the dark.Im not a baby! Aidan insisted, but he looked like he might cry.Something made a creaking sound. Did you hear that? Sienna asked. The creaking, scraping sound continued.
Whwhats that? Aidan cried. Is it a ghost? For a terrible moment CJ imagined a ghost swishing through the leaves towards them. Sienna looked around and then pointed.Look up at that tree, she said. The branches are scraping together in the wind.I wasnt scared at all, CJ boasted, but secretly he was glad it was just a tree. He reached for the bag of marshmallows.Suddenly an enormous beast with fangs and horns lunged at him!AHHHH!!! shrieked CJ. He ducked behind his chair and squeezed his eyes shut.
Please dont eat me!Instead of a ferocious roar, he heard a meow. CJ peeked through his hands to see his cat, Lucky, leap onto the fence.CJ stood up shakily, his face bright red. It was just my cats shadow, he said sheepishly.CJ knew what else he needed to say. Im sorry for making fun of you, Aidan, he added. We all get scared sometimes, Aidan said. You know, Sienna said. I bet we could still have a great campout in your living room. The three friends discovered campouts could be just as funand much less frighteninginside.
