Bragging is a long-cherished tradition in the Lone Star State. But the fact is Texas does have more unique people, places, events, inventions, and products - the first, largest, or only representative of their kind - than any other state in the Union. TEXAS can boast of: the tallest capitol building (seven feet taller than the Washington capitol, the biggest state fair, tallest ferris wheel (Dallas), the first air-conditioned domed stadium (Houston), the first U.S. Air Base (San Antonio), the most Dairy Queens, and much more!

Introduction
This book actually began, as so many do, with another book.
Several years ago, I contracted with another publisher to write a history of Texas for the upcoming state sesquicentennial. And I had 100 pages to do it in. Not fun, when you're dealing with as much history as Texas has. Still, I kept finding these wonderful little tidbits that I just hated not to use, so I put a "First, Largest, and Only" sidebar at the end of each chapter. I enjoyed them so much that I started, idly and with no particular purpose, collecting them into a file. And occasionally I'd give a talk on some of them to locals clubs, and everybody always loved it.
And then my folder got big enough to think about making a book of it. And the rest, as they say... is here.
Even though this is a "fun" bookwhatever that is; why would you read ANY book that wasn't fun?I've tried very hard to be accurate. I've gone through dozens of sources trying to verify every fact I have in here and sometimes even had to drop an entry because I couldn't be sure. Even so, there are probably a few mistakes, especially with modern events or places or people who are the largest whatever today but drop to second place tomorrow when a bigger whatever comes along.
There were several basic reference books that stayed on my desk throughout this project, and I highly recommend all of them. First and foremost, The New Handbook of Texas, a six-volume encyclopedia of Texas published last year by the Texas State Historical Association. I added a number of entries I found accidentally while flipping through the Handbook looking for another reference.
Then there's Ray Miller's popular Eyes of Texas series that covers the whole state, region by region. Miller has
