Was Billy the Kid the most romantic of Western desperadoes or a vicious killer? Ever since the Kid was shot by Pat Garrett in 1881, historians, storytellers, and filmmakers have been recounting and reinventing his life. In 1983 Jon Tuska published his first edition of Billy the Kid, and it was immediately recognized as the most accurate account yet produced. Choice called it A magnificent tour de force and a model for others who would study legendary heroes of the American West.In this new edition, Tuska reexamines the Kids life and legend, and he analyzes the numerous histories, novels, films, and other interpretations of the Kid. He points out the errors of earlier materials as well as those perpetuated in the last 12 years. As with the earlier volume, this is the last word on the Western figure who still captures the public imagination beyond all others. For public libraries and all students and scholars of the American West and American Popular Culture.

Preface to the Second Edition
No book I have written has generated so much correspondence from interested or curious readers as this one. Students in high school have written term papers based on it and on more than one occasion I have been made a mentor and have been interviewed over the telephone by students in order to incorporate my comments into what they intended to write. A newspaper in Paris telephoned me long distance in an effort to locate the progeny of Billy the Kid. Fortunately perhaps for them they are all now dead. I was an expert witness in what I thought a ridiculous lawsuit between Morgan Creek Productions which produced YOUNG GUNS (20th-Fox, 1988) and M-G-M/Path in which the former asserted that the latter had been guilty of copyright infringement in producing the "The Young Riders" for the ABC television network. I was quite firmly in M-G-M/Path's camp that such an assertion was patently absurd. Some mention of this lawsuit is made at further length in the analysis of the two Morgan Creek films about Billy the Kid and his gang. To this must also be added the observation that more has been written by historians about Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War and more films have been made about him in the decade since the first edition of this handbook appeared than in the previous two decades combined. I have included discussions of all these new arrivals in the appropriate chapters following the life of the historical Billy the Kid who, without all this media attention in the more than a century since his passing, would have remained an obscure New Mexican horse thief and minor participant in a mercantile war in which he found himself clearly on the losing side. Just why he should have been singled out in the fashion he has been by the media (and become the obsession of otherwise sane historians as well) is addressed in the chapter on The Legend of Billy the Kid.
