Seldom, if ever, will one see Eastern and Western cultures woven into an exciting fabric of engineering achievement as in this autobiography by Fu Hua Chen. A story of loyalty, devotion, ingenuity, and ambition, Between East and West is a moving chronicle of Chens remarkable life experience as an engineer, researcher, businessman, educator, and leader of people. Having worked seventy years in the field of civil engineering, he is known today both for his technical accomplishments and for his managing thousands of workers and motivating them to accomplish the impossible at a personal sacrifice rarely seen. After completing a masters degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois, Chen returned to his homeland, China, during the brutal years of the Sino-Japanese War and World War II. The son of a revolutionary martyr, he received medals from the presidents of China and the United States for helping to prevent the Japanese from conquering China in World War II, during the period when he managed construction of the Burma Road. His credits also include overseeing construction of the Tibet Highway, reconnaissing the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and founding a successful geotechnical consulting firm in the Rocky Mountain region, with seven offices in four states. Between East and West is a stimulating, inspiring, and entertaining book sparked by humour, history, and culture along the highway routes. It will appeal to a wide readership, with special interest to the engineering sector.
