Now in its fifth printing, this book features a rare treasury of Victorian and turn-of-the-century buildings and the people who first came to Northwest Denver. The areas pure air, great views, and clean water were great attractions. The book describes the areas incorporated suburbs of the 1800s, the farms, the early amusement parks, all of which became part of Denver around the turn of the century. Rediscovering Northwest Denver is a chatty, enjoyable read that tells of the tycoons and entrepreneurs whose fine Victorian homes still dot the area, and of the immigrants from various European cultures who clung together for comfort in the face of prejudice. It includes maps, photographs, past and present street names, a bibliography, index, and suggested tours. Northwest Denver today is typified by traditions, beauty, and pride, all of which the author captures in this ever-popular book.

Foreword
This new edition of Ruth Wiberg's Rediscovering Northwest Denver resurrects a rare, out-of-print bible for Denver's northwest quadrant. Thanks in part to Ruth's book, Northwest Denver is undergoing a renaissance with the rediscovery and restoration of many neighborhoods. Dozens of individual structures and seven districts have earned landmark designation.
For at least three decades, Ruth has helped Northwest Denverites rediscover their roots. Her memories, dating back to childhood, have introduced newcomers and reintroduced us lifelong residents to the characters, to the colorful women and men who climbed up the bluff of the South Platte River to find higher ground.
Ruth's guidebook and history leads us along the old gold rush trails that became major thoroughfares of Northwest Denver. She introduces us to the movers and shakers and takes us into their Victorian mansions. But she also shares with us the lives of blue collar folk in their small bungalows.
Ruth sensitively traces the migrations of various ethnic groups who have lived, loved, worked, fought, and moved into Colorado's most fascinating melting pot. She uses churches as focal points: All Saint's Episcopal for the English; Asbury Methodist (now Korean) for the Cornish and Welsh; St. Patrick's for the Irish; Mount Carmel for the Italians; and Our Lady of Guadalupe for Hispanics. Her chapter, "Towns on the Perimeter of Highlands," includes the town of Brooklyn on West Colfax Avenue where Jewish pioneers settled among Orthodox shuls and Kosher shops.
Argo, the smelter town named for the ship in which Jason sailed after the golden fleece in Greek mythology, hosted hardworking Slavs and Germans from Russia. Berkeley, in the northwest corner of Northwest Denver, became a haven for splendid city parks and Regis University. Ruth's extensive coverage of Elitch Gardens will guide redevelopment of the North Denver site after Colorado's most storied amusement park moved in 1995 to the Central Platte Valley.
Ruth's classic account revives Northwest Denver's neighborhood spirits. I have had the honor of representing Northwest Denver as a state representative or senator since 1971. During that time I have worked with Ruth and used her fine book for neighborhood tours that I conduct, often with my sidekick Tom Noel. One of the many advantages of this classic is the suggested self-guided tours you will find on the final pages.
So, dear readers, be delighted, be inspired by the treasure you hold in your hands, your guide to rediscovering Northwest Denver.
