When Star Trek first aired on September 8 1966 no onenot creator Gene - photo 2

When Star Trek first aired on September 8, 1966, no onenot creator Gene Roddenberry, the network, or even the first enthusiastic fans of the showcould have predicted the pop-culture phenomenon that had begun.

Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) depicting the adventures of Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy on board the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 may have only lasted three seasons before being canceled but the fans and their love of the show refused to let it die. As Star Trek conventions sprang up, Star Trek: The Animated Series (TAS) appeared on Saturday mornings, featuring the voice talents of the original cast. Several years later, the first film paved the way for twelve more motion pictures.

Some twenty years after the launch of the original show, a bold new series aired in syndicationStar Trek: The Next Generation (TNG). Set seventy-five years after Kirk and Spocks time, the new show broadened the universe as Captain Picard, Commander Riker, and Data and crew traveled the Galaxy in the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701D. The success of the show led to more spin-offs in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), Star Trek: Voyager (VGR), and the prequels Star Trek: Enterprise (ENT) and (the most recent) Star Trek: Discovery (DSC). Feature films also transitioned from the TOS cast to the TNG cast, before ending with the last film in 2002. For a few years, the franchise was dormant, until being rebooted in 2009 with a new timeline, new actors playing Kirk, Spock, and crew, and even a surprising guest star from the original Star Trek.

While no book could distill over seven hundred hours of programming into just one hundred lists, the following lists include some of the highlights, excitement, and fun of more than fifty years of strange new worlds and new civilizations.

KIRKS MOST MEMORABLE KISSES

WHILE CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRKS MOST LASTING RELATIONSHIP WAS THE ONE WITH HIS SHIP, HE ENJOYED ROMANTIC ENTANGLEMENTS WITH BEAUTIFUL WOMEN ACROSS THE QUADRANTS. SOMETIMES THE WOMEN HE KISSED WERE FLIRTATIOUS AND SOMETIMES THEY WERE DANGEROUS, BUT THEY ALWAYS PROPELLED HIM AT WARP SPEED BACK TO HIS ONE TRUE LOVE: THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE.

Edith Keeler Chasing a maddened Dr. McCoy into Earths past brought Kirk and Spock into contact with social worker Edith Keeler. Kirk fell deeply in love and Edith kissed him when he saved her from stumbling down the stairs. What he could not save her from was history; if she didnt die as she was supposed to, the Nazis would win World War II. Kirk had to keep himself and a restored McCoy from saving her when she was hit by a truck.

Lenore Karidian Kirks first kiss with the actress was forestalled when they discovered the body of his old friend, Dr. Thomas Leighton, while the Enterprise conveyed her acting troupe to their next destination. The troupe also included Lenores father, the suspected criminal Kodos the Executioner. Kirk romanced Lenore, hoping to uncover the truth behind her fathers identity. Sadly, Lenore knew of her fathers past and was killing anyone who may suspect, making their actual kiss almost fatal.

Marlena Moreau While trapped in a mirror universe where the Federation was an evil empire, Kirk encountered the seductive Lt. Marlena Moreau, who shared the alternate Captain Kirks lust for power. When she threatened to leave the ship, Kirk kissed her passionately and changed her mind. Back in his own universe, Kirk was surprised again to see that his universes version of Lieutenant Moreau now served aboard his ship.

Yeoman Rand Though their professional relationship was always tinged with an attraction (during one crisis on the bridge, she even held hands with Kirk), their only kiss was not consensual. A savage duplicate of Kirk created in a transporter accident tried to force himself on Rand. She got away, and after the duplicate was gone, Rand and Kirk managed to repair their relationship.
