Chapter 1: Who Was Queen Elizabeth? Her Childhood, Her Family, Her Destiny
Elizabeth the First was the first Elizabeth in the line of her family. She was the Queen of Ireland as well as England up until the day that she passed. Elizabeth was not just known as the Queen though; she had three different nicknames from those that she ruled. She was remembered as the Good Queen Bess, the Virgin Queen and Gloriana.
Elizabeth was the last of her family to take the throne inside of the Tudor dynasty.
On September 7, 1533, in the Greenwich Palace, Elizabeth was born to King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife. She was named after her grandmothers, Elizabeth Howard and Elizabeth of York. In order to survive infancy, she was born when Henry and Anne married.
When Elizabeth was born, she was the heir of Henry that was going to take over the throne because Mary, her half-sister, lost the right to become the Queen of England when Henry married Elizabeths mother after annulling his marriage to Catherine, his first wife. Henry did this as a way to try and ensure that a male heir was born so that the Tudor line could continue.
Three days following Elizabeth's birth, she was baptized by the Archbishop of the time while her Godparents the Dowager Marchioness of Dorset, the Duchess of Norfolk and the Marquess of Exeter all stood by watching.
Not yet 3 years old, Elizabeth experienced the loss of her mother being beheaded on the 19th of May in the year 1536. This occurred just 4 months after Henrys first wife, Catherine, died from natural causes.
Because Elizabeths father was no longer married to her mother, she was declared an illegitimate child of Henry VIII, and therefore, she lost her place in the succession to the throne. She also lost her title as the princess just like Mary had before her. But, since she was still a child of the King, she was referred to as Lady Elizabeth.
It was not even a month later that Henry was married to his third wife, Jane Seymour, who gave him the son that he always wanted. Being that Edward was the only male heir that Henry had been able to create, it was not disputed that he was the true heir apparent to the throne of England. Even though Elizabeth was still in her own household for the time being, she was not being taken care of as she should have. So her governess went on her behalf to the King to attempt to make sure that Elizabeth was given the care that she needed such as getting clothes that fit her.
All but cast aside once Edward was born, Elizabeth was placed in Prince Edwards household shortly after his mother passed away. She was also the one who carried the chrisom when it came time for him to be christened.
Because Edwards mother passed away while he was still very young, a bond was created between Elizabeth and her brother. It was a bond that was tighter than the one that Elizabeth shared with her half-sister, Mary. The fact that the brother and sister had more in common than the two sisters also aided this fact. Edward and Elizabeth were close in age, raised as Protestants, and had a passion for learning that lead them to get the best education that they could possibly receive.
Just like any other royal child, Elizabeth had a governess by the name of Margaret Bryan, and Bryan wrote about Elizabeth stating, As toward a child and as gentle of conditions as ever I knew any in my life.
Sadly, Bryan did not stay Elizabeths governess. In the fall of 1537, Elizabeth fell under the care of Blanche Herbert, who was her governess up until she retired several years later. But, Elizabeth also had another lady mistress by the name of Catherine Champernowne, who stayed friends with Elizabeth up until she passed in 1565.
Blanche Parry was the next in line for taking care of Elizabeth, and Blanche taught Elizabeth the top four languages that she would need to know in order to succeed in the world. These languages were Spanish, French, Italian and Flemish.
Thanks to Blanches teachings, when 1544 came around bringing William Grindal into Elizabeths life as her tutor, Elizabeth was able to write in three different languages. While under Grindals tutelage, Elizabeth moved on to be able to write in Greek and French. However, when Grindal died just a few years later, she was placed under Roger Ascham, a teacher who thought that the best way a child learned anything was to make sure they were engaged in their learning.
