Her relics draw great crowds, and Catholics from the world over make pilgrimage en masse to places associated with her life. Saint Thrse's vision of Catholicism was one of daily charity and prayer, where Jesus was close and approachable, not one of ritual and a distant God that required in-betweens. As a Doctor of the Church, Saint Thrse's writings have been the topic of discussion for many learned men and women throughout the century that has passed since her death.
However, through her heartfelt style of writing and simple message it has also touched a great number of lay Christians, in ways no one could have foreseen during her lifetime. Quick Facts The new Quick Facts section in The Life and Prayers collection provides the reader with a collection of facts about each saint! October 3 in General Roman Calendar 19271969, Melkite Catholic Church Attributes: Roses The Life of Saint Thrse of Lisieux The Little Flower of Jesus Saint Thrse of Lisieux, also known as Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, is without a doubt one of the worlds most popular Catholic saints. Her relics draw great crowds, and Catholics from the world over make pilgrimage en masse to places associated with her life. It can seem contradictory at first, the idea that one of the most venerable saints of the Catholic world, was a nineteenth century French nun, who was born into a well-to-do family, lived a quiet life in a monastery, and died at age 24 from tuberculosis. In her day-to-day life she touched but a few nuns, and given her short life it could be argued that she never truly reached her full potential. However, Saint Thrses writings have touched millions.
In her spiritual autobiography, The Story of a Soul , she presented an image of God that was in many ways quite contrary to the spiritual reality of many Catholics in the late 19th and early 20th century. Whereas many of Saint Thrses contemporaries feared God, Thrses vision of God was one wholly of love. Whereas many felt that Heaven was unattainable, and that saintliness was out of reach, Thrse presented an attainable path to a life of godliness. Saint Thrses vision of Catholicism was one of daily charity and prayer, where Jesus was close and approachable, not one of ritual and a distant God that required in-betweens. As a Doctor of the Church, Saint Thrses writings have been the topic of discussion for many learned men and women throughout the century that has passed since her death, but through her heartfelt style of writing and simple message it has also touched a great number of lay Christians, in ways no one could have foreseen during her lifetime. Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face was also influential in the development of devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus.
The formal veneration of the Holy Face, the miraculous imprint of the face of Jesus during or after his crucifixion, had begun only two decades before the birth of Saint Thrse, also in France, by the Venerable Leo Dupont. Pope Leo XIII approved this devotion in 1885. The devotion was approved only two years before the young Saint Thrse had an audience with Pope Leo XIII to request a special papal dispensation so she that could become a nun at the age of fifteen. The writings of Saint Thrse are some of the earliest that deal with the devotion to the Holy Face. Many have speculated that her youth has much to do with Thrses immense impact on Catholics around the world, beyond clergy and theologians. In a Church that at the beginning of the 20th century had become associated with older men, they argue, a young woman was someone with whom many could identify.
Some recent writers have compared her to Princess Diana, in that her youthful beauty, and intense emotions, cut tragically too short, inspire deep feeling among her observers. This should not, however, detract from the importance and great accessibility of her writings and her ideas, but rather supplement our understanding of Saint Thrses tremendous popularity. Because Saint Thrse wrote an autobiography, and because she lived so recently, much is known about her life compared to the lives of many other saints. In addition to The Story of a Soul , the Christian seeking to delve deeper into the life of Saint Thrse can turn to her published poetry and plays, or pious recreations as she would have called them. In addition, Thrses sister, Cline, whose religious name was Sister Genevive of the Holy Face, wrote a biography of her sister. Therese . Therese .
It is also Cline, or Sister Genevive, who is to be credited for the many photographs that exist of Saint Thrse in the later years of her life, and much of what is known about the parents of Saint Thrse, for she wrote biographies of them as well. The letters of Saint Thrse have also been published in English, in a work of two volumes. And the letters of Thrses parents, offering insights into Thrses early childhood and family life, have also been published in English under the title A Call to a Deeper Love: The Family Correspondence of The Parents of Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus , 1863-1885. In addition to these primary sources, as historians call original materials in which the writer speaks from personal experience, there are of course numerous biographies written by people who did not know Saint Thrse personally. These are important, but to the seeker who wants to understand not only the events of Saint Thrses life, but also her person, the primary sources are indispensable. As we seek to know and understand the life of Saint Thrse, we shall explore both source types in order to paint a complete picture.
Thrses Early Childhood Thrse was born in Alenon, in the French department of Lower Normandy, on January 2, 1873 and baptized Marie Frances Thrse Matrin two days later. She was born the youngest of nine children, although two of her brothers and one sister died in infancy and one sister died at the age of five. It follows that only five sisters, including Thrse, survived childhood. She was blonde with blue eyes, and frequently complimented, although her parents took special pains to guard her from these compliments that could have otherwise fed her vanity. Thrse was sickly from the start. She suffered from the same intestinal inflammation that had already taken the lives of several of her siblings.
