Introduction

After the publication of Bronsons Loose!: The Making of the Death WishFilms, I located and interviewed a half-dozen more alumni of the Death Wish sequels. This inspired an exhaustive search for more living cast and crew members who had worked with Charles Bronson on non Death Wish movies. The collection of three dozen new interviews plus an abundance of ongoing, extensive research snowballed into enough material for this companion book.

Bronsons Loose Again!: On the Set with Charles Bronson covers Bronsons career after the first Death Wish as well as during and after the sequels. Documented herein are production stories behind some of the best Bronson films of the 1970s; his work in the 1980s (including his pictures for the notorious Cannon Films); and his return to acting after a brief hiatus in the early 1990s in television movies that featured some of the more interesting performances of his entire filmography.

For this book, I wrote only about Bronson movies for which I could secure at least one primary interview. Films that have already been extensively covered elsewhere are not discussed here. Examples:the making of Mr. Majestyk (1974) is discussed in Walter Mirischs autobiography I Thought We Were Making Movies, Not History and in Richard Fleischers book Just Tell Me When To Cry; the making of Telefon (1977) is detailed in Don Siegels memoir A Siegel Film; and the extras on the Death Hunt (1981) Blu-ray (from Shout! Factory) cover everything about that film.

This book is intended to be read by those who have already seen the movies that are discussed. The story synopses in each chapter rarely run longer than one sentencebut the quotes, the anecdotes and the information contain spoilers. Each chapter is intended to be a stand alone piece to be read after each film is watched (or rewatched). There is some (very) minor overlapping of information between several chapters in this book and in the previous Bronsons Loose! book.

When the first Bronsons Loose! was released, I was amazed to learn that many Bronson fans were decades younger than me and that the stars young audience continues to expand. I hope that this book will entertain the Bronson buffs who want to learn more about cult favorites like Hard Times (1975), the Death Wish sequels (19821994), 10 to Midnight (1983), and Murphys Law (1986). I also hope that these chapters will lead more Bronson fans to discover or reevaluate his lesser-known,underrated films like From Noon Till Three (1976), Borderline (1980), Act of Vengeance (1986), and The Sea Wolf (1993).

No other action icon ever aged as well onscreen as Bronson did. He remains one of the most exciting and unique screen personalities in film history. It doesnt get better than Bronson.

Chapter 1 A Brief Bronson Biography

Charles Bronson once said, Theres nobody who had less regard for himself than I did in my youth. Theres nothing that gives a more inferior feeling than digging a hole in the ground.

The future international screen icon Charles Dennis Bunchinsky was born in Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania, on November 3, 1921, into a family of dirt-poor coal miners. When I was a kid, I used to take long walks in the woods while other boys were playing baseball or football. Every once in a while, Id spot a chicken that had gotten loose from its owners coop.Id throw my knife at it. Then Id chop off its head, gut the chicken, pack it in mud and cook it slowly over a fire. It really was delicious.

At sixteen, he went into the family business. The young mans time in the coal mines built up his later-to-be-famous physique, but the grueling work also left him with permanent scars on his back and periodic bouts with claustrophobia that lasted for the rest of his life. Even now, he recalled many decades later, when Im in the back of a car, I can get those feelings.

In the late 1920s, older brother Joe slightly modified the spelling of his last name to Buchinsky, and Charles (and most of the other siblings) followed suit. Charles was drafted into the Army in early 1943 and served as a tail gunner in the South Pacific. At one point he took a bullet in the shoulder, which added another scar to his already-creviced torso. For me, being drafted was like having a fairy godfather change me into a prince. Who knows where Id be today if I hadnt gone into the Army? I met my share of sonofabitches in the service. I remember back during World War II, when I was in gunnery school at Kingman,Arizona, the squadron had a party. This sergeants wife wanted to dance with me. Great big fat woman. Hell, I didnt want to dance with her.
