Introduction

When most people think of the most notorious crimes and criminals in history, they think of men. The statistics certainly show that men commit more crime in general and also more violent crimes, but women are not without representation. There has been a fair share of notorious female killers throughout history. From Lady Bathory to Lizzy Borden, there is no shortage of femme fatales.

The reasons women kill are usually the same as menprofit, pleasure, and revenge are all motives cited by female killersalthough the methods of operation are often slightly different. Women tend to use poison more than men use strangulation and women stab far less than men.

As you read this, you probably dont necessarily find it strange that there have been some pretty notorious female killers throughout history. After all, women have probably been killing as long as men. What makes this book unique is that it chronicles women who have killed their children.

As much as murder is considered the ultimate taboo in our modern society, prolicideor the killing of ones offspringis especially loathsome, especially when the killer is the mother. Of course, it is terrible when a father kills his children as well, but a mother develops a special bond with her children after carrying them in her body for nine months.

The breaking of that bond just makes a mother killing her children seem that much worse.

Youll find out, though, as you read through the pages of this book, that the reasons why and the circumstances in which mothers have killed their own are quite varied. Some mothers killed out of jealousy, some due to revenge, and others seem just plain crazy.

Youll read about some high-profile killer moms that you already probably know a little about. Follow along in the Casey Anthony case and decide for yourself if she killed her little daughter. Read about how Andrea Yates murdered all five of her children in cold blood. Remember the Susan Smith case back in the 1990s? That case is also profiled in this book. Although these are all high-profile cases that were heavily covered in the press at the time, youll read about details that arent common knowledge and youll get updates on the current status of these famous killer moms.

They say that revenge is a dish best served cold, but for a couple of these killers moms, they took that aphorism to the next level when they killed their children. The story of Christy Sheats, who was a seemingly normal, average mother, is profiled in this book. As Sheats marriage was about to fall apart and she believed she was going to lose everything, she killed her children in front of her husband. In a similar type of case, youll read about South Carolina mother Jessica Edens, who killed her children and then phoned her husband afterward to tell him.

There are a couple of women profiled who killed their children to be with men who didnt want children. Perhaps worst of all are those who killed for profit. Kelly Grant and Diane Staudte are two women who preyed on their children for money and did so in a way that was drawn out and painful.

Finally, a number of these cases defy explanation. Dena Schlosser and Isabel Martinez are two of the most bizarre killers of all, male or female, due to the strange reasons they gave for killing their family members. Both women believe they had a one-way phone line to God and that he told them to kill.

So, strap in for a fascinating and at times disturbing ride. Youll be glued to the pages of this book as you learn about some of the most notorious female killers in American history. Some of these women are serial killers, while others are mass murderers, but they all preyed on their families.

This is truly a collection of 16 of the worst women killers. And they probably dont celebrate Mothers Day.

Chapter 1
I Promise You Whatever You Want, Christy Sheats

Some people can never let go. Even when they know theyve lost their jobs, when they know theyve lost an argument, andoften especiallywhen a relationship is over, there are just some people who will never admit to the cold, hard facts of reality.

Of course, within this subset of people, there is a spectrum. Most just let the loss stew in their minds, holding onto the faint hope that one day they will be able to get back what they lost. On the other end of the spectrum are people who take extreme measures to get back or keep what they believe is rightfully theirs. These people will manipulate, lie, steal, and stalk their object until, usually, it ends badly for them.

And then there are the most intense cases. Those at the extreme of not letting go often seem to know that they can never get back what they lost. They rationalize the situation by reacting most irrationallythey take a life or lives.

Often the obsessed take their own lives in a fit of ultimate frustration. The more drastic will take the life of their object and the most disturbed will take the life of their object and several other lives before taking their own. Its a classic case of If I cant have you, then neither will anyone. Its a difficult thing for most people to contemplate, but unfortunately, it takes place much more than we would like to believe. Most of the cases involve an angry and upset ex-boyfriend or husband, whooften under the influence of drugs and/or alcoholdecides to take his exs life and anyone nearby along with her.

But occasionally, women are the ones doing the killing in these cases. And that shouldnt be surprising, should it? Women feel those same emotions as men when a relationship ends, especially if they arent the ones to end it. Women can also obsess over things and sometimes women even get violent. The following is the case of a woman who just wouldnt let go, which resulted in a massacre that rivals any of those committed by men.

On the evening of June 24, 2016, 42-year-old mother Christy Sheats was at her wits end. Her sanity was crumbling, her marriage was about to end, and she has lost all the respect of her family. So, to punish her husband, Christy did the most desperate thing imaginableshe committed prolicide (or the murder of her children). This is such a noticeable case because the killer mom thought about doing this for some time, planning precisely how she could elicit the greatest effect by the one witness who mattered.

It took less than half an hour, but once the smoke cleared, Christys and her 45-year-old husband Jasons two daughters17-year-old Madison and 22-year-old Taylorwere dead and not long after seeing her handiwork, Christy would also be dead at the end of a Katy, Texas cul-de-sac.

Childhood Sweethearts

Christy Sheats was born Christy Byrd in the very average, middle-class, middle American town of Decatur, Alabama. Life is slow and quiet in Decatur, with very little crime. It is a place where neighbors still know and talk to each other. Most people who are from Decatur like it and wouldnt want to live anywhere else because it is such a good place to raise a family.
