A Note From the Author

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the 7th edition of Answers to Question About Old Jewelry. Thank you for the opportunity to share some of my knowledge with you! I hope that your adventure with old jewelry, whether as a dealer or collector, is as exciting for you as it has been for me. After over 40 years in the business, I am happy to say that I am still learning and excited about old jewelry and the stories it can tell.

When I wrote the first edition of this book, I was surprised at the comments I received about the prices placed on the jewelry. Many readers wrote letters complementing my book but also stated that the prices were high. Others wrote that they loved the book, but thought that the prices were too low. Go figure! Remember, I do not make up these prices.

Value is a transient. It moves. It changes. What is valuable in one time period may not be valuable in another. For instance, when aluminum was first discovered, it was as valuable as gold. It was even used with 18k gold in pieces of jewelry remember that the next time you use an aluminum pot or pan. Human hair was once three times more valuable than sterling silver think about that the next time that you get your hair cut.
