Its hard to believe that our father has been gone for nearly thirty years. To the world, Roy Orbison was a legend, but to us he was simply Dad. Whether he was hanging out around the house, holed up in the purple roomthe office where hed work on new musichamming it up with friends, legends like Johnny Cash, George Harrison, or Carl Perkins, or simply cracking jokes and playing games with us, he never lost the humility he had from growing up hard in West Texas. But though we thought of him as Dad first, even to us he was something more than just a father. Even in our small world at home, we knew he was special.

Remarkably, the story of our dads life has never been told. Not the real story, that is. So this book is the first step in setting the record straight. But it also gives us the ability to provide some insight into what our dad was like, with us, growing up, and with his famous friends.

In putting together this book, the memories really came flooding back for all of us. We laughed and cried and recalled things together that had long been forgotten. But one of our favorite memories is of a visit the producer Jeff Lynne, who along with Dad was a member of the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, made to our lake house in Hendersonville, Tennessee. We were just next door to Dads pal Johnny Cash, and it was a busy place. Dad did business there, and if the door of his third floor office was closed, we knew he was writing or working on demos and shouldnt be disturbed. But the house was also a refuge where Dad could just be himself, and more often than not people would just be hanging about, palling around with him, or simply waiting for him to finish whatever he was doing. Or sometimes just to wake up.

One day, this guy with a thick English accent, sunglasses, and curly hair visited the house. Jeff Lynne had arrived for a meeting with Dad because hed begun producing records after leaving his group, the hugely successful Electric Light Orchestra, and he really wanted to make a record with Dad. Jeff would go on to single-handedly shape the sound of music in the late 1980s as a result of his work on George Harrisons Cloud Nine and Tom Pettys Full Moon Fever, not to mention Dads Mystery Girl album and, of course, those Traveling Wilburys records, but to us he was just another guy sitting on our couch waiting for Dad.

Wild, young kids at the time, wed met Jeff at the door when he arrived, and he had played with us for a bit, chasing Roy Jr. under the pool table. But wed been having a fight with wet paper towels, trying to pummel one another, or one of our moms friends who was visiting, and poor Jeff had no idea what he was in for. As he went to wait for Dad, we went into a nearby bathroom, loaded up our paper towel bombs, and resumed our battle. Just as Dad came down the stairs, we let loose with a furious storm, and one of the bombs nailed Jeff.

Dad sure wasnt too pleased, but Jeff took it in stride, and after we made our apologies, everything went back to normal and Dad and Jeff disappeared to talk shop.

Dad had just made the Class of 55: Memphis Rock & Roll Homecoming album with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins, which was sort of a Sun Records version of the Wilburys, but that was really unlike him, because it felt to everyone like a step backward. Dad was a songwriter, first and foremost, and he sure wasnt sentimental. He was always looking forward. If you asked him what his best song was, hed surely tell you The next one. But we had no idea how important Jeff, or any of the other guys around at the time, such as Rick Rubin and T Bone Burnett, would be to Dads career. Once they stepped in our door, they were just guys there to visit Dad, and we sure didnt think much of it.

Even a few years later, after wed moved to Malibu, when Dad seemed busier than ever before and the director David Lynch and Jeff and George and Tom and Bob Dylan were around a lot, daily life for us didnt change all that much. It was only later, after Dad was gone, that we realized that his story reads like the treatment for an almost unbelievable movie, conjured up by some highly imaginative Hollywood screenwriter.
